Greensboro, N.C. - Thanks to an offensive outburst by the Lions, Piedmont picked up a 10-1 victory over the Quakers of Guilford College to leave North Carolina with a split in the series. Piedmont's pitching staff was also stellar in the outing as sophomore
BEN MCCURLEY picked up the win tossing five innings giving up just one run and two walks to the 24 batters faced.
The Lions began the onslaught early with
BRADY BALLSTADT doubling to start the contest followed by
TYLER BURDETTE hitting a single to drive Ballstadt in to put PC on the board 1-0 just two batters into the contest. McCurley kept it quick in the first inning going 1-2-3 to start the game.
Piedmont went back to work in the second inning tacking on four runs on three hits to lead 5-0. Following the leadoff batter, the next six straight reached for Piedmont with back-to-back doubles by
CALEB NORTON and
JUSTIN GROOVER, a Ballstadt single, both Burdette and
ANDREW BURDEN were hit by pitches and
GRIFFIN OLSON reached on an error.
Guilford answered with their lone run in the bottom of the second with one run on three hits. It was relatively quiet until the fourth inning when Piedmont added another pair of runs thanks to two triples back-to-back by Burden and
ZACH LANGLEY. Burdette added another run for PC in the top of the fifth extending Piedmont's lead to 8-1.
SETH GEORGE entered for McCurley in the bottom of the sixth and pitched two clean innings giving up just a single hit. Burden hit his second home run of the season in the eighth inning sending in Olson as well making it 10-1.
MATT VONDERSCHMIDT pitched the eighth inning for PC while
BUDDY GREEN closed out the contest in the ninth.
The Lions had a total of six stolen bases in the contest after recording five in Friday's contest. Six Lions recorded two hits in the game as PC had 14 hits in the contest while giving up 10 hits.
Turning Point
--The Lions nearly batted around in the second inning sending all nine guys to the plate scoring four runs on three hits and one error to lead 5-0 midway through the second.
Standout Performances
--Six Lions had two-hit performances on the day including
ANDREW BURDEN's 2-for-4 day with three RBI and two runs scored.
--The Piedmont relief pitching staff did not allow a walk in their combined four innings pitched, giving up just two hits and striking out four batters.
