Gainesville, FL - The road season has officially kicked off for the Piedmont College cycling programs who took part in the Swamp Classic hosted by the University of Florida this past weekend.
Day one held a 13 mile road race course along the country roads of Gainesville, FL. The mostly flat course, gained approximately 300 feet of climbing per loop. The racing kicked off with the men's D field.
CONLEY WILHELM and
TANNER BATSON lined up with the other teams of the SECCC for their first time since riding for Piedmont College. Despite their lack of experience, both Lions showed their ability by finishing 5th and 7th respectively.
In the men's A road race,
DYLAN CANTRELL and
ANDREW GUELZO toed the line with 30 other racers. Averaging 25 miles per hour, the race was animated and despite multiple break away attempts, the field stayed together for a field sprint where Andy finished 7th and Dylan finished close behind in 12th.
For the women's A road race, Allar was outnumbered by 10 female racers from Milligin in addition to 4 other solo racers from other colleges in the SECCC. Allar rounded out the top 3 by winning the field sprint behind a pair of Milligin riders.
Combing forces, Cantrell, Guelzo, Wilhelm and Batson joined together to form Piedmont College's first ever men's team time trial team. Contesting 14 miles (7 out and 7 back) on the road race course, the men finished 4th only 1 second outside of top 3.
Standout Performances
--Allar was impressive once again finishing 3rd in the Women's A Road Race before winning the Collegiate Women's A criterium.
News & Notes
--The event was Piedmont's first road event of the season as the Lions and Lady Lions have five more road races before USA Cycling's Collegiate Road Nationals.
