Men's Basketball Wins Big Over Conference Foe Methodist 84-68

Demorest, GA - On Senior Day in Cave Arena, Piedmont's senior class rose to the occasion downing Methodist 84-68 to move to 7-5 in conference play with two USA South games remaining. The senior class combined for 47 of Piedmont's 84 points Saturday with PEYTON LUKEN and TRAE GAINES scoring 19 & 17, respectively. 

The Lions used a quick play to start the game up 2-0 after TRAE GAINES was fouled and connected on a pair of free throws just four seconds into the contest. It was never more than a two point game until Piedmont's TAYLOR MILLS hit a 3-pointer to put PC up 16-13 with 10:15 to go until the half. 

The Monarchs regained the lead shortly after with a 12-2 run to open up a 10 point lead with just over three minutes to play until halftime. Piedmont used back-to-back three pointers by Gaines and Luken to cut into the lead and trailed by four at the break 32-28.

PEYTON LUKEN tied the game at 35 just over three minutes into the second half on a shot from behind the arc and the Lions took the lead with 14:58 to go on a Luken layup making it 37-36. Piedmont would never trail again in the contest as the Lions slowly worked their way up to a 10 point lead 57-47 with seven minutes to go.

The Lions led by as many as 18 in the contest, winning by 16 84-68. JUSTIN VALLEJO led the team with 21 points while Luken added 19 and Gaines scored 17. The Lions outscored the Monarchs by 20 in the second half 56-36. 

Turning Point
--The Lions came out of the break at halftime with new life taking the lead for good on a layup by PEYTON LUKEN with just under 15:00 to play making it 37-36.

Standout Performances
--The five seniors for Piedmont combined for 47 points in the contest on senior day. 
--The Lions were 20-of-21 from the free throw line in the contest shooting 95.2%.

Inside the Box Score
--The Lions hit the gas pedal in the second half outscoring the Monarchs 56-36 after trailing by four at the break. 

News & Notes
--Piedmont is currently 7-5 in league play with two conference contests remaining against Greensboro and Covenant in the regular season.
