LaGrange, GA - The Piedmont College volleyball team opened the USA South portion of the schedule earlier Saturday with a pair of 3-0 wins first knocking off Mary Baldwin University before defeating Ferrum College later in the day.
In the first match of the day with Piedmont taking on the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin, it was the serve that set PC apart with the Lady Lions coming up with 16 aces including
HALEY HIXON's season-best seven. Hixon now has 25 on the season as Piedmont took the first 25-12.
In the second set, a 25-9 dominating performance set the table for a sweep with Piedmont winning 25-11 in the third.
CECE COGLIANO led the team with a .364 average as Piedmont hit .562 as a team in the second set with ten kills on just 16 attempts.
Against Ferrum in the second match of the day, Piedmont again was strong on the net though this time around it came on the offensive and defensive end with the Lady Lions holding the Panthers to a negative hitting percentage as a team in both the first two sets with a .000 in the third.
The Lady Lions' block had everything to do with the Panthers' struggles at the net as Piedmont earned five solo blocks and four block assists to shut the Ferrum attack down. Piedmont would take the first 25-17 before rolling to the 3-0 decision with 25-14 and 25-18 scorelines in the final two sets.
Turning Point
--Up five in the first against the Fighting Squirrels, Piedmont went on a 10-2 run to end the opening set on the way to the 3-0 win over MBU.
--Taking the second set against Ferrum allowed Piedmont to settle in for the 3-0 shutout, the second of the day.
Standout Performances
--
CECE COGLIANO led the Lady Lions in hitting percentage the first match with a .364 average tallying five kills on 11 attempts with a single error.
--
HALEY HIXON had seven aces against the Fighting Squirrels in Piedmont's first win.
--Cogliano teamed up with
KYLIE BLANTON in the second match of the day to be a force at the net as each hit over .400 with the two combining for 13 kills on 23 attempts.
--
KATELYN DURMIRE was efficient with three kills on five attempts for a .600 hitting percentage.
Inside the Box Score
--Piedmont had 16 aces as a team against Mary Baldwin University with five service errors while the Fighting Squirrels posted nine service errors to only one ace.
--The Lady Lions defended the net well against Ferrum with five solo blocks and four block assists while the Panthers mustered just two solo blocks.

--Piedmont opens conference play 2-0 for the fifth straight season with its pair of wins today.
