Winston-Salem, NC - In a rematch of a scoreless draw from earlier in the season, goals were again hard to come by with the Piedmont College women's soccer team traveling to Salem College where the Spirits grabbed a 1-0 win at home on Wednesday evening.
Piedmont controlled the run of play throughout the first half outshooting the home team five to three with several chances in the box to take an early lead.
Unable to connect on the attack in the opening 45, the Lady Lions then faced a second half surge from the Spirits with back-to-back shots coming in a flurry in front of the net midway through the period.
However, it was not until the 84th minute that either team was able to find the back of the net though it was the Spirits who scored with Brooke Bukas finishing a Maddie Crumpton cross from the right side breaking a scoreless game and handing Salem the win.
Turning Point
--The late score by Salem's Brooke Bukas set the two apart after the programs had combined to play a scoreless 193 minutes including a 0-0 draw from earlier this season.
Standout Performances
--
CASSIDY REICH led the way for Piedmont with her three shots with one of those finding the target.
--For Salem, Bukas was credited with four shots including the gamewinner in the 84th, her fifth of the 2016 season.
Inside the Box Score
--The two teams combined for 22 shots and seven corners in a fairly even contest as Salem owned a 12-10 shot advantage while PC was tops in corners 4-3.
News & Notes
--The contest marked the first time Piedmont has been shutout in five games, the team's last meeting against Salem.
--The win is the fifth straight for Salem who is now 10-1-1 on the year.
Up Next
Piedmont now continues its road trip heading to Macon, Georgia for a 2:00 pm match with Wesleyan College on Saturday, October 8. The Lady Lions then will drive up to Decatur to face Agnes Scott College the following day.
