Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College volleyball team split a pair of matches on a Saturday in Cave Arena with a loss to Huntingdon in three that ended it, but the day started on a high note with PC knocking off Covenant College in five, the West Division Regular Season Champs in the USA South.
Also the defending tournament champions, Covenant was a tough test for the Green and Gold as Piedmont went down two sets dropping the second in a big way 25-13. However, after winning the third to stay alive, Piedmont came alive in the 4th putting a resounding 25-10 score up as Covenant did not break double-digits until PC had set point.
With the match now tied at two sets apiece, the score was tight early in the 5th as Covenant's 5-4 lead was erased by three straight from Piedmont. However, once the Scots made it 7-6, Piedmont again fired up using three straight kills to go on a 6-0 run which included a tone-setting block by
AMANDA TROTTER and
LAINEY CHOINIERE.
As Piedmont went up 13-6 after the streak, the Scots would fight off match point four times but could not do so a fifth time as a heads-up play from
LAINEY CHOINIERE saw the freshman setter place a ball just inside the tape for the 15-11 win vs. the Scots.
The conference win for Piedmont was the first match of the day before the Lady Lions faced Huntingdon, a USA South member, in a non-conference contest later in the day. The momentum could not carry over for PC in the encore as Huntingdon took the match in straight sets, 25-20, 25-22, and 25-21.
