Demorest, GA - For the fifth time this season, the Piedmont College men's soccer team would need overtime to decide a match as the Lions fell to Covenant College earlier Tuesday evening on a golden goal in the 93rd minute of play that set the 1-0 result.
The goal came on a set piece opportunity as Covenant's John O'Carroll drove a deep service to the back post from the right side of the field right in front of the Walker faithful. The delivery found the waiting head of Carl Simakoff who nodded in the service past freshman keeper
MITCH BARRY for the 1-0 win.
Each team had chances to win it in regulation with Piedmont looking very dangerous on set piece opportunities as well taking six corners with several of those finding their way across the face of goal. However, the Lions were unable to connect for a go-ahead score as the two played 90 scoreless minutes forcing OT.
Covenant also had two opportunities on a back post run earlier in regulation with one of those being turned away by
MITCH BARRY after a point blank shot forced the youngster to make a key save. Barry had three saves on the evening in the loss.
Turning Point
--Carl Simakoff scored the gamewinner just a few minutes into the first overtime period on the evening as he headed away a free kick on the back post for the 1-0 win.
Standout Performances
--DIEGO GODINEZ led the way for Piedmont with three shots to his credit with three other Lions posting a pair each on the evening.
Inside the Box Score
--Piedmont dominated the major stat lines with six corners to one while outshooting the visitors by a wide margin as well 12-5.
--Covenant was more efficient with their chances though putting four of five shots on goal while PC posted three.
News & Notes
--The win for Covenant is the first on the road this season after two narrow one-goal losses earlier this year at NC Wesleyan and Birmingham-Southern were the closest calls until tonight.
--Piedmont has a 2-2-1 record in five overtime games this season with its two losses coming on set piece opportunities including Emory & Henry's corner kick winner earlier in the year.
--Four cautions were issued in the contest with all four handed out to the visiting team.
Up Next
The Lions take off for likely their toughest trip of the season as Piedmont will face Methodist and NC Wesleyan on back-to-back days this coming weekend for the regular season finale. On Saturday, October 22, the Lions take on defending USA South champs Methodist University in a 3:00 pm afternoon match. On Sunday, October 23, Piedmont will travel over to Rocky Mount to take on currently undefeated conference leader NC Wesleyan College in a 1:00 pm showdown.
