Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College men's soccer team has a flair for the dramatic winning 3-2 in overtime Friday over Ferrum College needing a penalty kick in the 89th minute to force OT. The win marks their sixth victory at home with four one-goal games coming at Walker Athletic Complex, three of those being victories.
The Lions jumped out in front in the early going with a goal by
VICTOR MUNOZ in the 12th minute as
DIEGO GODINEZ crossed it into the box from the right with Munoz finishing it in the right corner. It remained 1-0 until the 77th minute when Ferrum evened the score as Austin Williams placed one in the upper left corner of the net.
It was just a few minutes later that the Panthers would take the lead as Keith Ricks finished a long through ball placing it into the right corner of the goal. With a 2-0 lead, the Panthers looked to be set for their fifth victory of the season but a foul in the 89th minute in the box forced a penalty kick with
CHASE KANE stepping up to be the man of the hour.
Kane was in a similar situation in the Lions' last outing with the game winner in the 86th minute against Trinity Baptist. The junior did not disappoint as he lofted it past the keeper for the equalizer forcing overtime and giving the Lions one last chance. That opportunity would not be wasted as Piedmont was awarded a corner kick in the 94th minute with
JOSE LINARES taking the kick.
Linares connected with
NATHAN METZGER for the header sending the Lions cascading onto the field celebrating the 3-2 victory in overtime. The win was the third straight for Piedmont as they face Greensboro College Saturday at 2 p.m. as the Pride enter at 8-5 overall coming off a 4-2 victory at Covenant Friday.
