LaGrange, GA - The Piedmont College men's tennis team took care of the Panthers of LaGrange College earlier today claiming a 9-0 victory on the road in USA South play.
MATTHEW METZGER and
NATHAN METZGER claimed their fourth straight doubles win taking an 8-3 decision at the top spot. The two brothers from New Zealand are now 9-5 in doubles play this season playing at the #1 spot in all 14 of those decisions.
Winning at #2 doubles was the pairing of
MASON RIZA and
BRYAN BARNETT who picked up their second straight victory with a decisive 8-1 decision over Drew Cantrell and Zachary Tyner of LaGrange. The victory at #3 belonged to
ROBBIE WERNER and
TREY MARTIN who collected their sixth doubles win together with an 8-2 decision.
Piedmont also took all six singles decisions as well winning at #1 in three sets with
MATTHEW METZGER accounting for the win over Henrique Sizenando. Brother Nathan won in straight sets over Cantrell at the #2 spot 6-0, 6-2 as the two brothers have combined for 11 singles wins this season for PC.
Piedmont won at the #3 through #6 singles spots in straight sets as well with
TREY MARTIN picking up singles win #4 on the year with a 6-1, 6-3 win at the #3 spot over Mitchell Corley.
MASON RIZA picked up his team-high 10th singles win of the year winning at #4 while the winner at the 5 spot was
BRENT JENKINS who took the opener in tiebreak fashion 7-6 before claiming the second 6-3.
ROBBIE WERNER was the winner at #6 singles to move to 9-8 in singles play this season as the Lion knocked off the Panthers' Zachary Tyner 6-2, 6-4.
With the win, Piedmont improves to 7-7 on the season and is now 4-3 in USA South play putting the Lions 5th in the league standings.
PC will be back on the court this weekend again playing in the league as the Lions take on Greensboro College on Saturday, April 11 before wrapping up the regular season with a Sunday, April 12 date at Averett University. Both matches are USA South decisions for Piedmont who looks to make its third consecutive appearance in the league's postseason tournament.
