Greensboro, N.C. – The Piedmont College baseball team traveled to Guilford College this afternoon for a rescheduled non-conference matchup. The Quakers defeated the Lions 7-3 for the final game of the season for Guilford.
The Lions got on the board first in the top of the third inning on a two RBI single from
BRECK DAVIDSON scoring
GRIFFIN OLSON and
KEITH GRABOWSKI to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.
However, the Quakers responded in the bottom of the third with four runs of their own. One run was walked in, and then a base clearing double gave the home team a 4-2 advantage heading into the third.
Guilford picked up one more run in the fourth on a triple giving them a 5-2 lead heading into the fifth inning.
Davidson again gave the Lions a run in the top of the fifth inning on a single that scored Gresham. Piedmont would be unable to score again after this inning.
Davidson provided the only run support for the Lions finishing the day 2-for-4 with all 3 of the team's RBI. The junior leads all Lions with his 38 RBI, and moved into the top five at number five in RBI for the USA South Athletic Conference this afternoon.
The Quakers scored a single run in both the sixth and eighth innings to give the final score of 7-3. Leading the men in green and gold in hits on the afternoon was Gresham who finished the day 3-for-4 with a run scored.
The junior outfielder leads the Lions in batting average (.378), total hits (51), doubles (14), slugging percentage (.548), and on-base-percentage (.463). He comes in second with 28 total runs behind Olson who has 34.
Grabowski finished the day 2-for-4 with a run scored on the afternoon to be the final Lion to have a multi-hit day.
WILL SKIDMORE and Olson picked up the Lions two remaining hits.
ALEX ASTIN made his third start for the Lions on the mound this afternoon and picked up his first loss of his career throwing three innings and giving up four runs on two hits while striking out three.
MICHAEL HENDERSON made his sixth appearance of the season throwing 1.2 innings giving up two runs on two hits while striking out five of the ten batters he faced. The Lions' pitching staff struck out ten batters this afternoon.
ALLEN TOKARZ and
JOSH THOMAS both made relief appearances once again for the Lions to finish the game. Tokarz threw 1.2 innings on three hits and no runs with two strikeouts.
Tokarz leads the USA South in ERA with a 1.91 showing in 47 innings pitched allowing only 10 earned runs while striking out 42 batters. Thomas threw the final inning allowing one run on two hits.
The Lions fall to 22-15 overall on the 2015 season as the Quakers improve to 14-22. Up next for the Lions will be a three-game non-conference series against in-state rival Emory University.
Piedmont will host Emory Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Loudermilk Field in Demorest, Georgia, but will travel to Atlanta, Georgia to play at Emory University Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. and Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
