Rocky Mount, N.C. - The Piedmont College men's tennis team rolled to its fifth straight victory Friday morning with a 9-0 victory over LaGrange College in the USA South tournament. This marks the second victory over the Panthers by a 9-0 score within the last eight days.
Piedmont dominated in doubles play taking the first three points with brothers
MATTHEW METZGER and
NATHAN METZGER taking the #1 doubles point 8-1 marking their seventh straight win in doubles play. Following suit was the pairing of
MASON RIZA and
BRYAN BARNETT in the #2 doubles spot winning 8-3 while in the #3 position was
ROBBIE WERNER and
TREY MARTIN winning 8-1.
NATHAN METZGER has also reeled off an impressive streak in singles play as he has won five of his last six singles matches. That streak includes a win against Drew Cantrell of the Panthers as well as Friday's victory in the #1 singles spot over Henrique Sizenando. Metzger's battle in the #1 singles spot was 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) to seal the 9-0 win.
MATTHEW METZGER got to face Cantrell this time around but also easily put him away with a 6-1, 6-0 decision while
TREY MARTIN won in straight sets and did not drop a single game.
MASON RIZA went 6-3, 6-3 while
BRENT JENKINS had one of the hardest roads coming back 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7).
Finishing off the day for the Lions was
ROBBIE WERNER in the #6 singles spot with a 6-2, 6-3 outing. This is the second straight season the Lions have posted a 9-0 win against LaGrange in the opening round of the USA South Tournament and the third straight season with a win in the opening round to advance and play another day.
Piedmont will be back on the court taking on #1 seed N.C. Wesleyan at 10:00 a.m. at the Slick Family Foundation Tennis Center on Saturday morning continuing action in the USA South tournament.
