Defensive Execution and Situational Hitting Propel Lions to 3-Game Sweep over Maryville

Maryville, TN - The Piedmont College baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Maryville College earlier today with a 7-3 victory over the Scots.

The Lions tallied nine more hits bringing their series total to a massive 40, while only conceding 19. Situational hitting gave the Lions the edge today, and their first USA South Conference sweep of the season.

Senior MAX OBERKOFLER picked up his first start of the season on the mound, hurling four strong innings scattering seven hits and only two runs. However, fellow senior LUKE MACDONALD would pick up the win pitching three solid relief innings giving up two hits and one run while striking out three. JOSH THOMAS would shut the door in the eighth and ninth striking out one, and not allowing a single base runner.

The Lions' defense would shut down every chance Maryville had in the final game. The Scots were 0-4 with bases loaded, 3-17 with runners on, and 1-13 with runners in scoring position. The lockdown defense of the Lions did not commit an error all weekend for the first time since a 3-game series with Huntingdon College in April of 2012.

The men in Green and Gold would bat 3-for-5 with runners on and less than 2 outs, 5-16 (.313) with runners on, and 3-12 (.250) with runners in scoring position.

The top of the 2nd would give the Lions the opportunity to extend the lead. After a pitch hit EVAN GRESHAM, already with one RBI on the day, BRECK DAVIDSON strutted to the plate. WILL SKIDMORE would score on a wild pitch before a single up the middle would plate GRIFFIN OLSON. Gresham would later score on another wild pitch to give the Lions a 5-0 advantage.

The Scots would pick up runs in the bottom of the second, fourth, and seventh, but stranded 12 runners on base throughout the game. After the fourth inning, the Scots managed only 3 hits and one run.

Offensively the Lions were led by BRECK DAVIDSON who went 3-5 with 2 RBI on the day. Davidson acquired 7 hits and 4 RBI during the three-game sweep. Going 1-3 with 2 RBI as well was AUSTIN BRICK who picked up his 4th RBI of the season as well.

However, Junior WILL SKIDMORE picked up a 2-5 day on Sunday, which brought his total to an astounding 8 hits so far this season. Skidmore's totals were two hits less than that of the entire Scots team in the first two games of the series.

The Lions are out to a 3-0 start as well as 3-0 in USA South Conference play, and with no conference tournament, every conference matchup controls a postseason opportunity.

The Lions will play next at home in Loudermilk Stadium against fellow USA South Conference opponent LaGrange College in a three-game series. The series will start Friday at 7pm, with game two on Saturday at 3pm, and finish Sunday at 2pm.
