Demorest, GA- The Piedmont College Baseball team started their three game series tonight with visiting LaGrange College and while both teams were able to captitalize on fielding errors, the Lions were able to overcome three errors in the field to pull out a 7-6 victory. The Lions (4-0, 4-0 USA South) were led offensively by Sophmore
GRIFFIN OLSON who went 2-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored, and also Junior
WILL SKIDMORE who added two more hits to his hot start bringing his total to 10 hits in four games.
Early in the game, both sides were unable to get anything going offensively as a pitcher's duel was in the making. However, a 2 out error by
KEITH GRABOWSKI extended the top of the third inning for LaGrange as the Panthers plated four runs that inning.
CHRIS GOERSHEL (2-0) would concede his first earned runs of the 2015 season as only one of the four would be scored as unearned.
The Lions were eager to rally as LaGrange starting pitcher Eric Morell (0-1) had held the lions to just one hit in the first two innings, striking out three.Senior
CASEY PARHAM would start the rally with a leadoff single in the bottom of the third. Skidmore would reach on with his first hit of the day setting the stage for Olson.
Olson would lace a double down the left field line plating both runners and putting the Lions on the board.
BRECK DAVIDSON would pick up his sole RBI of the day launching a double to left field to plate Olson as the score would settle at 4-3 after three.
The men in green and gold would not wait long to bust open the runs. In the bottom of the fifth, Grabowski would lead off with a single and would advance to second on the sacrifice bunt by Skidmore. Olson would pick up his second hit driving a lazer to the Panther left fielder that would be mishandled allowing Grabowski to score and the Lions to tie up the game.
Olson would score on a wild pitch set up by the first of two costly balks for the Panthers. Junior
MICHAEL BARNES would pickup his third RBI of the season, and the Lions' final one of the day, with a single scoring Davidson.
DANIEL LINDSEY would later score the eventual game winning run on the second balk of the inning.
LaGrange would respond with two more runs in the top of the sixth, but still qualifying Goershel for the win. Goershel would finish his day throwing six strong innings giving up four earned runs and striking out four. The USA South Pitcher of the Week from week one would pick up his second victory in his second outing.
The Lions bullpen would take over as
ALLEN TOKARZ came in to pitch the seventh and eighth striking out two and not allowing a hit. Junior
JOSH THOMAS would pick up his first save of the 2015 season coming in to shut the door on LaGrange in the ninth going three-up, three-down picking up a strikeout as well.
LaGrange falls to 0-2 on the season and 0-1 in USA South Conference play, while Piedmont improved unblemished in conference play. Game two of the series will be at Loudermilk Stadium tomorrow afternoon with game time projected at 3 pm.
