10 Run Ninth Powers Panthers Past Lions 16-5

Demorest, GA- The Piedmont College Baseball team would fall to the LaGrange College Panthers 16-5 Saturday splitting the series at one game apiece. The Lions would scatter eight hits throughout the ballgame, but an explosive ninth inning by the Panthers would give them the finishing touch.

Junior WILL SKIDMORE would lead the Lions offensively with his 2-for-3 day at the plate, along with junior MICHAEL BARNES going 2-for-4. Senior CASEY PARHAM picked up his 6th RBI of the season.

An explosive third inning saw LaGrange pick up four runs as they did Friday, however, the Lions would only manage to score two in the bottom half of the frame. Both teams would quiet down again until a Parham double in the sixth would knot the score at 4-4.

LaGrange would threaten in the top of the seventh as LUKE MACDONALD would come in to relieve freshman SETH GEORGE. George in his second outing of his college career pitched six strong innings giving up only four runs on four hits with four strikeouts. The freshman was able to settle down after the third inning and compete to give the Lions a chance.

ALLEN TOKARZ would be called upon for the second day in a row in the top of the seventh with two outs and bases loaded. Tokarz proved to be effective once again shutting down LaGrange, but gave up two more runs in the top of eighth to bring the score to 6-4.

The Panthers offense would explode for 10 runs in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach for the Lions. However, CHRIS WHITE would come in to pinch hit and lead off with a triple in the bottom of the ninth. White would later score on a TYLER MARCINKO ground out to give the Lions their final run.

The 16 run loss marks the most runs the Lions have given up since April 28, 2012 against LaGrange College. The Panthers defeated the Lions 18-5 in the GSAC Conference tournament effectively ending the Lions post-season chances.

Relief pitcher Tyler Brooks would pick up his first win of the 2015 season on the mound for the Panthers, as Tokarz would accept his first loss since a 5-4 decision against DePauw University on March 28, 2014.

Skidmore was able to improve his average to an even .600 on the season, which currently places him fourth on the list of top batting averages in the USA South Conference.

The Lions will wrap up the three-game series with LaGrange tomorrow afternoon with game time set at 2 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the Lions, or stay up to date with live stats by visiting PiedmontLions.com.
