Lions Narrowly Edged by Panthers In Doubleheader By One Run Each Game

Fayetteville, NC- The Piedmont College baseball team matched up against Ferrum College this afternoon for a doubleheader at Methodist University as the Lions fell in both contests.

The two teams squared off at a neutral site because of weather, and it was the Panthers that would end up on top of both winning both games by one run. The Lions were lead offensively by TYLER MARCINKO who made his first start at second base of the 2015 season producing 4 hits and 4 runs with three extra-base hits.

In the first matchup of the day, EVAN GRESHAM would pick up the Lions' first run scoring Marcinko on an RBI single. Gresham would finish the first game 3-for-5 with a game high two RBI. The duo provided six of the Lions' eight hits in the first game of the doubleheader.

Piedmont would pick up one more run in the third and fourth inning each to give starter CHRIS GOERSHEL a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. Goershel gave up his first run in the bottom of the fifth, and would come out of the game with a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh.

The Panthers' bats came alive in the seventh and eighth scoring four in the seventh, and one in the eighth to give them a 6-5 advantage heading into the ninth. The Lions were unable to respond to the late-inning rally as ALLEN TOKARZ (1-2) would take the loss throwing an inning and two-thirds only giving up two hits and two runs in his outing.

Ferrum reliever Jared Talley picked up his first win of the 2015 season as Alex Brown collected his second save of the season.

The second game saw the Lions outhit the Panthers, but a late-inning rally wasn't enough to defeat the Panthers who raced out to an early lead this time around. Marcinko would pick up his second double of the day in the second game after having picked up his first triple of the season in the first game.

BRECK DAVIDSON got the scoring going for the Lions in the first inning with a sacrifice fly to center field that would score GRIFFIN OLSON. Davidson totaled four RBI on the day, while Olson went a stellar 2-for-3 with two walks in the second game.

The Panthers would respond to the Piedmont offense again picking up four runs in the bottom of the first. The men in green and gold responded in the top of the second with an RBI double from sophomore ZACH LANGLEY. Langley made his first start in left field for the Lions in the second game of the DH and had an incredible day at the plate going 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Ferrum scored one more run in the second against starter SETH GEORGE (1-1) before freshman DREW COKER would make his pitching debut. Coker asserted his position into the Lions' bullpen throwing five and two-thirds only giving up three hits and two runs while striking out three.

Piedmont picked up runs in the third and fifth inning to cut the lead to three. Both teams would stay quiet offensively until Piedmont loaded the bases in the top of the ninth. The Lions scored two runs bringing the game to within one before the outstanding Ferrum defense would end the rally and take game two of the series.

Panther reliever Jason Washburn picked up his first win of the season while Alex Brown picked up his third save of the season, and second of the day.

The two losses bring Piedmont to 7-4 in the USA South Athletic Conference and 7-4 overall. Ferrum improves to 7-4 overall and 4-2 in the USA South Athletic Conference.

The two teams will square off tomorrow at 1:00 pm with weather permitting. The game will be hosted by Methodist University again and fans are encouraged to stay tuned to PiedmontLions.com for all updates on game times and schedule changes.
