Sewanee, TN - The Piedmont College men's tennis team came out on the good end of a 5-4 decision earlier today knocking off the Colonels of Centre College in a neutral site match. The contest was the second of two for a road trip to Sewanee, Tennessee as the Lions completed the journey 1-1 and are now 1-1 to start 2015.
PC started the day with two wins in the three doubles matches to open as the pair of
MATTHEW METZGER and
NATHAN METZGER picked up their first win with the brother tandem defeating Trey Williamson and Nathan Stein in a close 8-6 match. The two, better known as "Metzger Squared" on the Lions tennis team, are now 1-1 on the season as a doubles combo.
Winning at #3 doubles was
ROBBIE WERNER and
TREY MARTIN as the two are now an even 3-3 as a doubles pairing in the last two seasons combined. Werner and Martin won convincingly over Smith and Kamperman of Centre taking a 8-1 decision as PC held a 2-1 advantage after doubles play.
Piedmont picked up wins at #1 and #2 singles with
NATHAN METZGER claiming the win at #1 taking a 7-5, 6-4 decision over Trey Williamson while older brother Matt won 6-4 and 7-6 with a 7-3 tiebreak in the second set. However, wins at #3, #4, and #6 singles by Centre forced Piedmont to need a decisive win at the #5 singles slot as
MASON RIZA came through with the 5th and final point needed winning 6-4, 6-3 over Luke Brooks.
The win puts Piedmont now at an even 1-1 this spring. The Lions will get back on the courts a week from today when Piedmont plays host to Point University, a February 21 match set to start at 10:00 am in conjunction with the Lady Lion match against Point as well.
