Lady Lions Come Up Just Short of Upset in 3-2 Loss to Covenant

Demorest, GA - In a thrilling five set match, the Lady Lions came up just three points shy of a victory falling to the South Division leader Covenant 3-2. Piedmont challenged the Scots down to the last point but the Scots moved on with just one loss in conference play.

KATELYN DURMIRE had an impressive night for the Lady Lions with 11 blocks, tying the NCAA Era individual match record set twice by Katie Tucker back in 2007. MALLORY LEARY led the team with 16 kills while HALEY HIXON tied her career-best with 34 digs in the contest.

The Scots took the first set 25-19 but Piedmont battled back to take the second set by an identical score. The third set took extra points as Piedmont outlasted the Scots 26-24 in an intense set. Covenant took the fourth set 25-19 on a late run and again won the final few points to seal the match in the fifth set. 

Piedmont trailed 23-21 in the third set before winning five of the next six points to take the set. The Lady Lions were outscored late in the fourth set 13-3 as Piedmont could not keep pace with the Scots. 


The match was the final one of 2015 for Piedmont inside Cave Arena and marked the final match of MALLORY LEARY and TAYLOR CRAMSEY's careers at the Johnny Mize Athletic Center. 

Turning Point
-The Scots outscored Piedmont 13-3 to end the fourth set and maintained momentum to take the match in the fifth set. 

Standout Performances
-Katelyn Durmire had a monster night with 11 kills and 11 blocks for a double-double, tying the school record for blocks in a match.

Inside the Box Score
-Piedmont had three players with 10 or more kills as Leary had 16, AMANDA TROTTER added 12 and KATELYN DURMIRE had 11. 
-MALLORY LEARY's 16 kills led the team and marked her second-best performance of the season.

News & Notes
-Piedmont ended the season 5-5 at home inside Cave Arena.

The Lady Lions travel to Raleigh, N.C. to take on Meredith and Methodist in a tri-match on Saturday. Piedmont faces Meredith at 11:00 a.m. and Methodist at 1:00 p.m. on what will be Piedmont's USA South instagram takeover weekend.
