Lady Lions Use Momentum in Win over Ferrum and Take Set from Conference Leader Averett

Demorest, GA - In the only home conference tri-match of the season, Piedmont split a pair of matches earning a win over Ferrum College 3-0 while suffering a close loss to Averett 3-1. This marked the first loss in a tri-match for the Lady Lions this season as they are now 9-1 in tri-matches in 2015.

Against Ferrum, Piedmont took the first set 25-21 before making a remarkable comeback in the second set to win 25-22. Piedmont trailed 19-11 before storming back on a 14-3 run to end the set. AMANDA TROTTER served four straight points early in the run while HALEY HIXON served the final six points of the set. The Lady Lions took the third set 25-21 to seal the match.

MALLORY LEARY led the team with 13 kills while AMANDA TROTTER and KATELYN DURMIRE both added 8 kills. EMILY PETERS had 36 of Piedmont's 41 assists in the match and HALEY HIXON led the way 17 digs while TAYLOR CRAMSEY accounted for 12. 

Taking on the top team in the league, Averett, Piedmont dropped the first two sets 25-15 and 25-18 before coming back to win the third set 28-26. The intensity in Cave Arena was undeniable as these two teams battled back-and-forth matching one another point-for-point late.

Piedmont led 11-6 but the Cougars charged back to take a 12-11 lead. From that point, there was never more than a three point lead for either side as Cramsey earned the final kill to give Piedmont the third set. The Lady Lions tried to maintain momentum in the fourth set but dropped it 25-20 to end the match.


Leary again led the team with 12 kills and a .333 attack percentage while AMANDA TROTTER added 10 kills and Cramsey contributed nine. Peters again posted over 30 assists with 33 while Hixon led the team with 19 digs. 

Turning Point
--Piedmont rallied on a 14-3 run to end the second set and put away the Panthers in the first match of the day.
--The Lady Lions took the third set against Averett in one of the most intense sets in Cave Arena this season winning 28-26.

Standout Performances
--Leary's 13 kills against Ferrum continued her stretch of leading the team as she had a team-high 10 kills against Agnes Scott Thursday while adding a team-high 12 against Averett.
--Hannah Shields of Averett is atop the conference in kills per set and showed why posting 24 kills against Piedmont in four sets.

Inside the Box Score
--EMILY PETERS had a double-double against Averett with 33 assists and 11 digs.

--Piedmont sits at 15-11 overall and 8-4 in the USA South with four conference contests remaining.
