Box Score Raleigh, NC - The Piedmont College women's soccer team struggled to get going earlier today against Guilford College in the Meredith Soccer Classic, but the Lady Lions caught a spark at the half to tally four second half goals en route to a 4-0 shutout of the Quakers. PC had more than a 90 minute delay before getting to kickoff and stayed dormant through the first 45 minutes of play, but had a surge early in the next 45 minutes to get the win away from home.
After a rather uneventful first half that saw PC struggle to create attacking chances, Piedmont held a 5-2 shot advantage at the intermission with four corners as well while Guilford did not have a corner in the first half spending most of the half defending.
However, Piedmont picked up the pace in the second half almost immediately as it was
Kalyn Dumanowsky who broke through just five minutes after the break to score the game's first goal and her third of the short 2014 season, tied for the most on the team. Dumanowsky sits at the top of that scoring list with sophomore
Savannah Castles who scored the next two goals for PC, one in the 62nd minute and one in the 74th, as Piedmont would score three of its four goals in the final 30 minutes of the contest.
Senior
Nikki Means scored the team's fourth and final goal when she put away a
Megan Hatfield cross in the 76th minute to put the final score at 4-0 in favor of the Green and Gold. Piedmont outshot Guilford 15-3 in the second half forcing the Quakers' keeper to make eight saves in the final 45 minutes.
Picking up assists on the day were sophomore
Haley Hall and Means while
Shayna Rogers tabbed a helper on the team's first goal, her fourth assist in the last two games for Piedmont. Junior
Michaela Gardner picked up the win in the net playing the first 74 minutes while freshman
Ashlie Gonzalez finished off the final 16 minutes for the shared shutout, the second in a row for the pair.
Piedmont moves to 2-1 with the win having played all three games away from home so far in 2014. The Lady Lions will continue their road swing with another game in the Meredith Soccer Classic tomorrow at now 1:00 pm against Salem College. These two last met in a 4-3 thriller back in the 2011 GSAC semifinals that saw Piedmont come out on top on the way to a conference title.
