Box Score Sewanee, TN - The Piedmont College men's soccer team got off to a good start but saw the hometown Tigers of Sewanee rally back late to hand the Lions a 4-3 loss in overtime earlier tonight in a non-conference matchup. Piedmont went up 2-0 less than eight minutes into the game, and held a 3-2 advantage until the 72nd minute when Sewanee tied the match to force overtime where the Tigers picked up the game-winning goal on a free kick chance three minutes into the extra period.
The Lions went up early as a pair of newcomers combined for the game's first goal less than 90 seconds after the opening kickoff with youngster
Colin Little putting a
Matthew Metzger pass into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Six minutes later, Piedmont's
Ryan Herbert doubled the lead with a score of his own tucking away a pass from
Kevin Posmer.
Up 2-0, Piedmont saw Sewanee cut the lead in half just a few minutes later as Ford Emerson's strike in the 11th minute gave the hosting Tigers life. Despite the early fireworks, the scoring settled until the second half when Sewanee tied the game at 2 on a Max Hawes unassisted score.
Now 2-2, the freshman
Ryan Herbert struck again in the 57th minute to answer Sewanee's rally as he scored his second goal of the game and of the season to put the visitors up 3-2. However, Sewanee provided an answer of its own just 15 minutes later with Ramsey Seagle tallying a goal to force overtime after the two ended regulation tied at three.
Through 90 minutes, Sewanee held a 16-11 shot advantage though PC held the edge in corners taking four to the Tigers' one. Piedmont would also get a corner in the overtime period applying pressure early on in the extra minutes, but it was Sewanee who would capitalize on its own set piece chance in overtime to get the gamewinner and earn a 4-3 win over Piedmont.
It was the Tigers' Walker Ueland who put away the free kick chance just outside the penalty box for the home team to thwart Piedmont's charge towards taking a victory on the road. Piedmont keeper
Kenneth Hearn had six saves in the loss while the team was led in shots by youngster
Chase Kane who took five total on the night.
The Lions move to 1-2 overall after the loss to Sewanee and will only have a few days to regroup as Piedmont pays local rival Toccoa Falls College a visit on Tuesday night. The September 9th match against the Eagles is set for a 7 pm kickoff.
