Lady Lions Battle to Scoreless Draw at USA South Foe Methodist

The Lady Lion soccer team will be happy to walk out in front of their hometown fans after a brutal conference back-to-back weekend in the Carolinas though PC picked up a key point on the road with today's scoreless draw vs. Methodist.
Box Score Fayetteville, NC - The Piedmont College women's soccer team played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer on Saturday afternoon at Methodist University to earn a very crucial point on the road with a 0-0 draw.  The Lady Lions stay in the top four of the conference standings with the result and also keep their title hopes alive with the road result as they will now travel to LaGrange College on Wednesday evening, a team that sits directly behind them on the league table.

After a back and forth first half, Piedmont dominated the run of play over the final 45 minutes of regulation but could not quite get the final ball needed to put a score on the board.  In the closing minutes, PC would see several chances just clear the crossbar and also had a chance from Kalyn Dumanowsky go just wide after the Methodist keeper came out to close the angle on the play.

Despite the momentum in the second half, the Monarchs would be the aggressors in overtime pushing the issue with six of their 16 shots coming in the 20 extra minutes needed after regulation could not decide a victor.  However, Piedmont keeper Michaela Gardner was up to the task as she had been the entire afternoon making six saves on the day after collecting 11 the day before against Meredith.

Gardner would close out the match with a point blank save on a shot that just barely beat the final whistle, but the Lady Lion keeper secured the shot and helped Piedmont post a shutout for the sixth time in ten games this season.  Gardner leads the league in save percentage with her .867 mark and is the only goalkeeper in the USA South with a goals against average below 1.00.

With the tie, the Lady Lions move to 2-1-1 in league play and wrap up the month of September at 5-3-1 overall.   Piedmont is now 30-7-3 overall in the month of September over the last four seasons dating back to the 2011 campaign when PC went an impressive 10-0-1 in the month.

Piedmont will continue its trek through the USA South schedule on the road as the Lady Lions travel to in-state rival LaGrange College on Wednesday evening.  The 7:30 pm kickoff on October 1st can be followed by fans via live stats provided by the Office of Sports Information at LaGrange College.
