Meredith Blanks Lady Lions 2-0 in USA South Matchup on the Pitch

Meredith avenged a 2-1 loss in last season's conference final handing visiting Piedmont a 2-0 shutout earlier today in Carolina as the two USA South schools met for the fifth time in the last three seasons.
Box Score Raleigh, NC - The Piedmont College women's soccer team could not get into a rhythm against the hosting Avenging Angels of Meredith College in a USA South contest earlier today falling by a 2-0 scoreline.  In a rematch of last season's conference final that saw Piedmont come out on top 2-1 to claim the USA South crown, today's contest went against the Green and Gold as Meredith scored a pair in the second half to hand PC its first league loss of the season.

Outshot eight to five in the first half, Piedmont was able to keep it a scoreless game through the intermission but could not create as many chances to find the net as the home team.  Meredith, however, forced Lady Lion keeper Michaela Gardner to make seven saves in the first half while also creating five corner kick chances putting a great deal of pressure on the Green and Gold defense.

Following the break, things got worse for PC in a hurry as the Avenging Angels tallied the first score of the game less than three minutes into the second half.  The score came off a deflected shot from Meredith's Sarah Varnell which deceived Gardner in goal and dropped in for a 1-0 lead in favor of the home team.

Meredith would double the lead with just about a quarter of an hour to play as Megan Amanatides placed a cross from the right to the far post making it 2-0 for the Avenging Angels.  Overall, PC was outshot 20 to eight including a 12-2 difference in the second half as the Lady Lions were shutout for a third time this season.

With the loss, Piedmont moves to 5-3 and picks up its first defeat of the year in USA South play moving to 2-1 in league contests.  Excluding the Lady Lions' postseason win over the Avenging Angels in last season's conference final, Piedmont is now 1-3-2 against Meredith in regular season matches since the series started between the two in 2009.  All three losses have come away from home for PC.

Piedmont won't have long to rest as the Lady Lions play again tomorrow at USA South member Methodist University with kickoff scheduled for 4:00 pm in Fayetteville.  The September 27 contest is a rematch between a pair of programs whose last showdown in Carolina was not shy of drama as PC needed three 2nd half scores and a goal 20 seconds into overtime to take a 4-3 win in 2012.
