Explosive Second Half Leads to Lions Blowout with 5-1 Win Over William Peace

Piedmont Head Coach Jimmy Stephens has his team right where he wants them to be through two games of the USA South schedule - 2-0 after another league win today, a 5-1 thrashing of William Peace University.
Box Score Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College men's soccer team is off to its best start since joining the USA South winning today 5-1 over visiting William Peace University to move to 2-0 after the league's opening weekend of play.  The Lions pick up their fourth straight win as well, the longest such winning streak since the 2008 season, while the margin is the second time Piedmont has defeated a team by at least four goals in the current four-game winning streak.

The game was relatively quiet in the first half until a wonder strike from Robert Williams right before the intermission sparked a celebration by the junior from Conyers, Georgia and gave the home team the lead they were looking for in the 41st minute.  Williams' strike came just shy of 30 yards out and was the result of a deflection that fell right to the foot of the Lion who promptly smashed it to the upper 90 on the right side of the goal.

Up 1-0 through half, Piedmont's Vincent Thomas would double the advantage in the 55th minute when he put away a pass from Ryan Herbert as Thomas now has five goals on the season, tied for the best on the team with Herbert.  Herbert collected five total points in today's contest as he also scored in the 64th and 74th minutes to answer a goal from William Peace in the 62nd that had cut the lead to just one.

Herbert's second goal was one of the highlights of the afternoon as he bent a free kick with his left foot around the wall of William Peace and curled the chance just inside the far post to put his Lions up 4-1.  PC would add a fifth in the 84th minute when Colin Little headed in a free kick service from Matthew Metzger to set the final margin of 5-1, Piedmont's largest margin of victory in a USA South contest since becoming a league member prior to the 2012 season and the Lions' largest margin of victory in a conference game since a 9-2 win over Huntingdon College in October of 2009.

The Lions outshot the Pacers 17 to nine taking seven corners to just one for William Peace.  Junior Kenneth Hearn gets the win in goal playing the full 90 making three saves to collect his fifth win of 2014, one shy of his season high as a starting keeper for the Lions.

Piedmont is now 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the USA South after the win today.  The Lions will get back on the field this coming Tuesday when they pay a visit to the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe University for a 4:00 pm afternoon kickoff on September 23.
