Box Score Ferrum, VA - The Piedmont College baseball team struggled again at the plate in game two of their three-game series with the Panthers of Ferrum College, though this time around it was history for one team. Ferrum's Dillon Weaver tossed a no-hitter on Friday afternoon as he allowed two walks striking out seven to cement his place in Panther history with the no-no.
Weaver was the second straight Panther to toss a complete game against PC as Jake Perkins did so last night in a 4-1 win for Ferrum in the series opener. Weaver however got through his nine without allowing a hit as a pair of walks and a sac bunt were the only three scars on what came close to a perfect outing for the Panthers.
Weaver's no-hitter is the third one this season for the Ferrum Panthers as Perkins has tossed the other two, one in a 3-0 win over Southern Virginia on February 1st and the other in a 13-0 win over Maryville. Prior to this season, the Panthers had seen only one other no-hitter thrown in the previous 21 seasons combined.
Ferrum's Justin Cox scored what turned out to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the first as he went 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of runs scored. Piedmont was able to draw two walks from Weaver on the day, one in the 5th and one in the 6th. However, other than those two frames and the first inning when
Griffin Olson reached on an error, PC was retired in order by Weaver.
Taking the loss on the mound for Piedmont was the youngster
Preston Graham who falls to 5-5 in his debut season on the mound through 11 appearances. Graham went five and a third giving up two earned runs on three hits as he owns a 4.35 ERA in 62 innings of work this season.
PC is now 22-13 overall and 14-9 in USA South action. For the Lions, the loss makes the road to a USA South regular season title now extremely tough though the top of the conference leaderboard continues to shake up. League leader Covenant College lost its opener earlier today to Maryville College 9-0 to fall to 15-7 in USA South play as Covenant has lost three of its last four league games.
After Huntingdon and Methodist split a doubleheader to open their conference series as well, Piedmont is now tied with those two in the loss column as Huntingdon is now 16-9 and Methodist 14-9.
The finale of Piedmont's series with the Ferrum Panthers is set to take place tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pm in Virginia.
