Box Score Wilson, NC - The Piedmont College baseball team settled in at Fleming Stadium for a 4-2 victory after giving up a pair of runs in the first to Averett University to take game two of the three-game series between the two in a neutral site matchup.  The Lions picked up two in the top of the 8th to set the difference in a pitching duel over the first seven as PC climbs closer to the top of the USA South standings with the league win.
Piedmont starter
Preston Graham allowed a pair of runs to start out the night as a single to left and a double to the gap in right drove in the Averett scores as Graham continues to start slow in his last few outings.  The freshman has now given up eight runs in the first inning of his last two starts combined although the youngster settled in nicely tonight tossing seven complete allowing six hits, only three of which came after the 1st inning.
Single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings for PC quickly tied the game as
Evan Gresham would single up the middle to score
Daniel Lindsey for the Lions' first run while the second came on a
Griffin Olson grounder to 2nd base which scored
Keith Grabowski.
Deadlocked at 2-2, the contest turned into a pitcher's duel for the next few innings as neither team would score until the top of the 8th inning as PC put up a two-spot to take a 4-2 lead with both runs coming on a single up the middle by Lindsey which scored
Josh Bailey and
Breck Davidson after the Averett centerfielder misplayed the ball allowing the second run to score.
Averett would have to use four different pitchers to get through the 8th though Piedmont would turn the ball over to just one as
Allen Tokarz came on to pitch the 8th and 9th innings with PC up by two in a save situation.  Tokarz did not allow a hit as the only runner to reach came on a two-out error in the 8th as the Piedmont reliever retired the side in order in the 9th to clinch a two-run win for the Lions.
Offensively, five different Lions collected basehits on the night including Lindsey, Gresham, Grabowski,
Michael Barnes, and
Will Skidmore.  RBIs went to Olson, Lindsey, and Gresham as Piedmont stayed perfect in their Carolina trip.
With the win, Piedmont moves to 21-10 on the season, but more importantly improves to 13-7 in conference play as they now sit just one game back of Covenant College in the loss column after the Scots dropped two of three to Methodist University this weekend.
The Lions will play the final game of the Averett series tomorrow at noon as they look for the three-game sweep though the first two games have been decided by just three runs combined.  Live stats will be provided courtesy of the Office of Sports Information at Averett University as links are provided on PiedmontLions.com at the baseball schedule page.  The contest will take place at Five County Stadium, home of the Carolina Mudcats in Zebulon, North Carolina.
