Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College men's tennis team put on a clinic at Burgen Tennis Courts earlier today with a 9-0 thrashing of Covenant College in USA South action. The Lions took all six singles decisions in straight sets giving up just ten games along the way to their 5th shutout win of the 2014 season.
In doubles action,
Matthew Metzger and
Mason Riza moved to an even 5-5 as a pairing in 2014 with an 8-2 win at the top doubles spot while
Robbie Werner and
Christopher Davidson accounted for the win at #2 in the closest of the three doubles wins, 8-6 PC. The pairing of
Joel Silverberg and
Patrick Steck completed the doubles sweep with their 8-2 win as highlights are available on the

After their win at the #3 doubles spot, Steck and Silverberg then picked up singles wins as well with Silverberg claiming a 6-1, 6-3 win at the #1 singles spot while Steck took his win 6-0, 6-2 at #3. Riza claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win at the #4 spot to move to 9-4 in singles play this season with four of those nine wins coming at the #4 singles slot.
Making appearances for the first time on the day were
Trey Martin at #2 singles and
Jay Evans at #6 singles as the two each won in two sets dropping a combined two games between them. Martin won 6-1, 6-1 to pick up his eighth win of the season while Evans moved to 5-1 in singles play on the season with his 6-0, 6-0 win, the third such win for the senior who has dropped just five games combined in his five singles wins in 2014.
Werner accounted for the sixth singles win for PC in the match taking a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Connor Shimmel at the #5 slot as he moves to 4-1 now playing at the #5 singles slot on the season.
With the win, Piedmont moves to 8-5 on the season and 4-2 in USA South play, good enough for a 5th place standing in the league. The Lions now take on 2nd place Huntingdon College in one of the biggest matches of the year tomorrow afternoon in Montgomery as the Hawks have yet to drop a conference decision in 2014 at 6-0. First serve in Montgomery for the April 2nd match is set for a 4:00 pm Eastern start.
