Orlando, FL - The Piedmont College men's tennis team took care of business Sunday morning winning 7-2 over SUNY-Oneonta to complete their trip to Orlando as part of the SpringBreakSports.com tour. For the Lions, it was their third win in four matches on the week as Piedmont picked up two key doubles wins to start off right in the 7-2 win on Sunday.
Taking wins in doubles action were the pairs of
Robbie Werner and
Trey Martin as well as
Patrick Steck and
Joel Silverberg. Werner and Martin took their win 8-6 at the #2 doubles slot to move to 2-1 as a doubles pairing while Steck and Silverberg were 8-5 winners at the #3 spot staying perfect at the #3 doubles spot on the season at now 6-0.
Holding a 2-1 lead after doubles, the Lions would get five more points to complete their 7-2 overall match victory as all but #3 singles went the way of PC.
Matthew Metzger won at #1 singles over Michael Kennelly of SUNY-Oneonta, 6-2, 6-3 while Silverberg was a winner at #2 in tiebreak fashion, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5). Winning his fourth singles match in five tries was
Jay Evans who won at the #6 slot 6-3, 6-0.
Mason Riza and Werner accounted for the final two points, with Riza winning in three sets at the #4 position, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Werner rallied from a 6-0 loss in the opening set of his match at the #5 slot to win set two 7-5 and take the decider 6-0.
The Lions are now 7-5 on the season and wrap up their trip in Orlando with a 2-1 record. Piedmont now readies for Covenant College who comes to town this Tuesday, April 1st for an afternoon match at Burgen. First serve is set for 3:00 pm.
