Box Score Lookout Mountain, GA - The Piedmont College baseball team fell in walkoff fashion for the second time this season when Covenant College used a bases loaded singled to right to take a 4-3 decision in game one of a three-game weekend USA South series. PC has lost only four games on the season at now 12-4 though two of those have come in the opponent's final chance at the plate away from the friendly confines of Loudermilk.
Piedmont got a run in their first chance at the plate as
Keith Grabowski came home to give the Lions a 1-0 lead though it would be shortlived. In the Covenant third, a homer from the Scots' Chris Rollins tied the game at one though the home team would add another run before the inning was out to steal the lead 2-1 after three.
In the Piedmont 4th, a Covenant error on a Lions bunt allowed
Griffin Olson to tie the game at two's while a
Daniel Lindsey single to center with two outs pushed Piedmont's
Josh Bailey home to allow the visitors to go back up once more, 3-2.
Covenant's own RBI single to center in the 5th tied things up at 3-3 but the Scots would not be done for the day as late inning heroics again proved to be an issue for Piedmont. The Lions' first loss in 2014 came in a 9th inning rally by the Eagles of Emory University who took a 4-3 decision with a walkoff single in the bottom of the 9th back on February 15th.
In the 9th inning today, the Scots would get a chance with bases loaded and one out after an intentional walk put the force on at every base. However, Covenant's Scott Gillespie ended the game in the next at-bat for the home team as he singled to right to score Collins from third as the Scots rallied for a 4-3 win over visiting PC.
Collins got the win for Covenant on the mound as well tossing the final two innings in relief of starter Micah Mabe who went seven innings allowing three runs on seven hits. The loss went to Piedmont's
Josh Thomas who threw only the 9th for PC as he allowed the walkoff hit with one down in the bottom of the 9th.
While Lindsey was the only Lion to record an RBI on the day, freshman
Griffin Olson finished 2-of-4 at the plate with a run scored while first baseman
Breck Davidson was two for three. Davidson also drew a walk, one of three issued to the Lions on the day while six were drawn by the hosting Scots.
Josh Bailey and
Keith Grabowski were the remaining two Lions who crossed the plate.
Matt Lisk got the no-decision after six innings tossed with three runs allowed, all of which were earned, as he struck out three and walked three as well.
The loss drops PC to 12-4 as three of those four losses have come by two runs or less in 2014. Piedmont moves to 5-2 in the USA South as well as the Lions are two games back of the top two teams in the league standings with plenty of conference baseball to go on the season.
Piedmont will finish its three-game series at Covenant College tomorrow with a doubleheader set to begin at 12:00 pm in Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
