Men's Tennis Shuts Out Johnson University 9-0 in 2014 Home Opener

Joel Silverberg cruised at #1 singles winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 to take his first singles win of the 2014 season as Piedmont shut out visiting Johnson University 9-0 earlier this afternoon.

Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College men's tennis team had no problem taking a 9-0 victory over Johnson University earlier today in their home opener at Burgen Tennis Courts.  The Lions won each singles decision in straight sets and dropped just a pair of games in the doubles competition en route to their first win of the season evening their overall record at 1-1.

Taking a win at the #1 singles spot was Joel Silverberg as he played in the top slot for the first time this season winning 6-0, 6-1 over Johnson's Jacob Clark.  Matthew Metzger got his first win of his Piedmont career wiping Dale Hathaway away with a 6-0, 6-0 decision at the #2 singles spot.

In doubles action, Silverberg and Metzger teammed to win their competition at #1 doubles by a perfect 8-0 score while Robbie Werner and Christopher Davidson were victorious at the #2 doubles spot.  Trey Martin, who had Piedmont's lone singles win on the season heading into today, was paired with Mason Riza at #3 doubles to win their decision by a flawless 8-0 as well.

The Lions move to 1-1 overall with their win and start off the home portion of 2014 with a victory, the fourth straight time the Lions have done so under current Head Coach Shane Wood who returned to lead the program prior to the 2011 season.  Piedmont now faces Ferrum College to open USA South play in 11 days as the Panthers will travel to Demorest for the February 28th match set to start at 3:30 pm.
