Three-Point Troubles Haunt Lions in 83-66 Road USA South Loss to Huntingdon

Piedmont's Chase England was the only Lion in double figures in Sunday's 83-66 loss at USA South foe Huntingdon as the freshman scored 14 points on five of 12 shooting to lead PC in scoring for the second time in his last three games.
Box Score Montgomery, AL - The Piedmont College men's basketball team fell by 17 earlier today in an 83-66 road loss at USA South foe Huntingdon College who sits currently in 4th place in the league standings.  The Lions shot only 14% from beyond the three-point line going four of 27 from downtown as their overall shooting also struggled in the road loss that puts a tall order in front of PC as the boys from Demorest will need to win out and hope for some help to have a chance at the USA South postseason.

Piedmont stayed with the Hawks as the two tied at nine following a three-pointer from Chase England at the 15:49 mark of the first half.  However, 14 straight points from the Hawks set the two apart as Huntingdon started to test the youth of PC who started a veteran today for the first time since a January 24th contest against Ferrum, snapping a six-game streak where all five starters were first-year players.

With just over five minutes to go in the half, Piedmont would trail by 20 at 38-18 as Huntingdon twice opened a lead as large as 22 in the opening period including a 44-22 lead with just under two minutes to go in the half.

Heading into intermission with a 19-point advantage, Huntingdon continued to pound the ball inside against the Lions outscoring PC 30-20 in the paint in the second half after posting a 31-16 advantage in the first half.  As they have all season, the Lions would fight back trying to get back in the game cutting the lead down to 14 with 11:19 to play on a Jordyn Propst layup.

However, Huntingdon went on another big run scoring eight points to PC's two over the next two minutes to once again open up a 20-point lead at 63-43 with 9:07 remaining.  Huntingdon stayed in control down the stretch not letting Piedmont get to within any better than 17 points in the last nine minutes en route to an 83-66 decision that sent PC home with two losses on the weekend after the Lions fell at LaGrange on Saturday.

Freshman Chase England was the only Lion in double figures on the day as he scored 14 points on five of 12 shooting hitting one of Piedmont's four three pointers in the loss.  Classmate Brian Edwards was next on the scoring list with his nine points following by eight from Jessie Jenkins and a quartet of Lions with six points apiece.

Safari Smith led the team with his three assists not turning the ball over once in 15 minutes of action.  Freshman Trae Gaines was the team's top rebounder with his seven.

The loss puts Piedmont at 8-14 overall and 3-9 in conference play as the Lions have dropped five of their last six decisions, all coming in USA South play as the boys from Demorest are still mathematically alive for the USA South postseason.  The Lions don't control their own destiny though as they would need to win out and hope for some help from the teams right in front of them in the standings, one of which comes to the Cave this week as Covenant travels to Demorest for a make-up game after snow postponed last week's scheduled meeting.

Winning out won't be easy as the Lions now play host to the league's top team in 11-1 Maryville College who travel down as the #1 team in the league who suffered its first conference loss earlier today at the hands of LaGrange College snapping the Scots' run at an undefeated USA South season.  Tip off in the Wednesday contest with MC is set for 7:30 pm.  Live coverage will be provided courtesy of the Mane Event Broadcasting Network.
