Sewanee, TN - The Piedmont College men's tennis team faced a stout test earlier this afternoon when taking on Sewanee in the 2014 season opener on the road in Tennessee. The Lions could only take one decision off the Tigers who took the match 8-1 with Piedmont's
Trey Martin accounting for a win at #3 singles.
In the opening round of doubles play,
Matthew Metzger and
Joel Silverberg teamed up at the #1 doubles slot falling 8-3 to the pair of Connor Winkler and Avery Schober from Sewanee. At the #2 spot,
Mason Riza and
Trey Martin fell 8-4 while freshman
Robbie Werner teamed up with
Chris Davidson to get his first action with the Lions falling 8-1 at the #3 doubles spot.
In singles action, Martin accounted for Piedmont's lone decision on the day when Sewanee's Rand Jackson was forced to retired after already trailing by a set with Martin having taken the first 6-1. In the remaining singles matches, Piedmont fell in straight sets.
The Lions get back on the court this coming Monday when they play host to Johnson University who comes to Burgen Tennis Courts for a 2:00 pm afternoon match. Monday will be the season opening match for Johnson whose February 15th match with Tennessee Wesleyan was rescheduled to February 19th.
