Piedmont Gets Defensive in Second Half to Rout Covenant on the Road 83-52

Piedmont's Chandler Alverson tallied a game-high 15 points in tonight's 29-point road win over South Division foe Covenant College to hand Piedmont an 8th USA South win this season.
Box Score Lookout Mountain, GA - The Piedmont College women's basketball team had little trouble in the second half of an 83-52 victory over Covenant College on the road earlier tonight in USA South action.  The Lady Lions held the hosting Scots to just 23 points in the second half and only allowed a single three pointer to connect for Covenant in a dominant performance away from home.

Chandler Alverson's corner three to begin the game set the tone from the very beginning as Piedmont got 15 from the sophomore as she scored in double figures for the third time in the last five games out.  Alverson was six of ten from the floor on the night including three of five from distance as she led all scorers on the evening.

With the score staying tight throughout the beginning of the opening period, Piedmont held a ten point lead with 8:34 remaining in the first after a pair of free throws from Gabby Arencibia who was a perfect 4-of-4 from the stripe on the night.  A three point play the old fashion way by PC's Le'Shaunda Jones made the margin 13 just seconds later as the Lady Lions looked to rebound of their loss this past Saturday to Huntingdon College with a win at another South Division opponent tonight.

As PC tried to take control for good, the Scots continued to try and stay in the game as they fought in the final minutes of the first to keep it a single-digit margin.  With the Lady Lions up by 12 after a Carly Sales jumper with under a minute to go, Covenant's Alex Quimby connected on a three-point try with time expiring to put her Scots down by nine at the half, 39-30.

However, that Quimby three with the buzzer sounding in the first would be the only three pointer on the night for the home team as the Lady Lions allowed a single three-point basket for the fourth time on the season to tie a season-low mark in that defensive category.  The Lady Lions locked down on the defensive end in the second half to allow just 23 points on seven made field goals with the Scots picking up nine of those 23 at the line.

After a pair of Covenant free throws to open the second half, Piedmont would go on to score 19 of the next 27 points capped by a Brianna Barrett tri-fecta that gave Piedmont its first 20-point lead of the night with 9:29 remaining.  Another pair of Covenant free throws with just under three to go brought the Lady Lion down to 16, but it was all over from there as Piedmont scored a dozen straight down the stretch en route to the 82-53 victory in conference play.

With a 29-point win on the road, Piedmont moves to 8-4 in USA South action taking a half game lead on Huntingdon for second place in the South Division.  The two will meet again though later this weekend in a key conference week for the Lady Lions who face four straight South Division foes in a seven-day period.

Alverson's 15 topped all scorers on the night as she was one of three Lady Lions in double figures along with youngster Le'Shaunda Jones and senior Lauren Hamel who each had 11 points on the night.  Jones shot 5-of-7 from the field while Hamel was 5-of-12 and led the team with her seven rebounds, five of those coming on the offensive end.

Three other Lady Lions totaled six rebounds a piece including Carly Sales, Julianne Bayer, and Brianna Barrett who also led the team with her four assists.  In just her freshman year for the Lady Lions, Barrett has led the team in assists eight times including twice in the last four games.

Piedmont moves to 14-7 overall with the convincing road win, but will have to make its memory short as they host Covenant for an encore this Thursday night with tip off in the Cave set for 5:30 pm.  Live coverage will be provided courtesy of the Mane Event Broadcasting Network as well as WCON radio.
