Box Score Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College men's soccer team could not overcome a second half score by visiting Bob Jones University earlier tonight a 1-0 loss at Walker Athletic Complex. The Bruins used a header to put themselves up by a goal late in the second half against the Lions who fell to 1-3 in their last four games picking up the first home loss so far this season.
Each team would get their chances on the evening but despite 16 combined shots in the first half, neither team would score over the first 65 minutes. It wasn't until the 66th minute that either side would dent the scoreboard as it was the Bruins striking on a header from Garrett Martin as he put away a Jared Simmons cross which just got over the outstretched keeper,
Kenneth Hearn, from Piedmont.
The goal would end up as the gamewinner as neither team would score in the remaining 24 minutes. On the night, Piedmont was led by
Chase Kane's five shots though just one of those would find the target while four other Lions chipped in two each.
BJU outshot the hosting Lions 19 to 15 in the contest including a 10-8 margin in the decisive second half while each team would accrue seven corners. Piedmont would have chances to equalize in the closing minutes as youngster
Ryan Herbert sent a chance from just outside the goal box over the crossbar while teammate
Matthew Metzger was denied by Bruins keeper Joseph Wooster just moments later on a point blank shot just inside the 18.
The loss drops Piedmont to 6-5 overall on the season and is the first loss at home for the Lions in 2014. PC had won their first three games at home this season prior to tonight by a combined 10-4 margin.
The Lions now travel for their next competition playing at North Carolina Wesleyan College in a USA South matchup this coming Friday afternoon at 2:00 pm. The contest is a rematch of last year's 3-2 thriller at Walker Athletic Complex that saw the Lions come out on top courtesy of a goal in the extra time by
Vincent Thomas.
The Battling Bishops are at the top of the league table so far this season with 12 points through their first five matches and their only loss coming in a 2-1 decision against last year's champ, Greensboro College.
