Volleyball Sweeps Pair of Saturday Matches to Open Home Portion of 2013 Schedule

Junior Kaitlin Norman led Piedmont at the net on the way to a pair of victories in the Cave tallying 21 total kills and six total blocks including a back-to-back block-kill sequence in a tied second set against Brewton Parker that secured a 3-0 win over the Barons.

Demorest, GA - Rallying from two sets down in its first match of the day, the Piedmont College volleyball team gave its home fans quite the thrilling day to open the home portion of the 2013 schedule winning two matches in the Cave earlier this afternoon.  PC had to come from behind to claim a tight 3-2 victory over Oglethorpe University in the opening match of the day before rolling to a 3-0 straight set winner over Brewton Parker College in its encore performance.

In Piedmont's first match, the Lady Lions found themselves in quite a battle with a Georgia-based foe as Oglethorpe took both of the first two sets played in the day's opening match 25-20 for a two sets to none lead.  Though PC struggled in the early going, it was the team's defense that would help to even out the match as Piedmont tallied ten blocks compared to just four for OU to get back in the swing taking set #3 by a 25-16 score.

In the fourth set, Piedmont looked to be pushing the match to a deciding fifth set taking a 9-3 lead before a well-placed timeout from Oglethorpe first-year Head Coach Richie Tang helped the Stormy Petrels regroup and go on a 9-3 run of their own to tie the score at 12 a piece in the fourth.  The set would stay close down the stretch with each team trading shots as OU claimed a late 22-20 lead three points away from closing out the match.

However, that was as close as Oglethorpe would get to doing so as Piedmont rattled off five straight points to storm back for a 25-22 victory courtesy of three Jackie Campbell kills over those five points.

With OU having been pushed back on its heels and dropping two straight sets to PC for a 2-2 overall tie, the Lady Lions would not let go turning a 10-3 lead in the fifth and deciding set into a 15-7 winner for the 3-2 match victory.  That win pushes Piedmont's record in five set-matches to 3-0 in 2013 compared to 1-3 in the same category during the entire 2012 season.

Leading Piedmont against the Stormy Petrels was Kaitlin Norman who tallied a dozen kills on the match hitting .267 on 30 attempts.  Campbell added eight more of her own as did fellow hitter Taylor Cramsey.  Sophomore Xandy Green and senior Katheryn Knarr each tied for the assists lead with 20 a piece as the two accounted for 40 of the team's 47 helpers in the match.

After rallying from two sets down in its first match, Piedmont rolled into its second match of the day against Brewton Parker with something to prove and looking to get the 6th win of 2013 for the home team.  The Lady Lions were able to do just that defeating the Barons in three straight 25-21, 26-24, and 25-11.  The big moment of the match came in set #2 when the Lady Lions found themselves trailing 24-22 as BPC hoped to level the match at one set a piece.

It was the junior hitter for PC in Kaitlin Norman though who would not let her team slip into a tie.  After a Danielle Maffett kill and an attacking error by the Barons tied the score at 24, Norman stuffed a Brewton Parker attack attempt at the net to put PC up 25-24 and ended the set with an emphatic kill of her own to help PC along to the 3-0 eventual shutout.

Leading the way at the net against the Barons was Norman who tallied nine against the visitors posting a .471 hitting percentage to lead all hitters with multiple attack attempts. Cramsey posted eight kills on the match, the same as her total in the first match of the day for PC, to come in second in that category.  Adding seven kills was Mallory Leary while veteran Jennifer Opper added a half-dozen more to help the effort as the two combined to collect eight digs as well.

For the defensive side of the ball, senior Jessica Hollis totaled just one shy of 20 digs for the match, a total which led both teams.  Youngster Katie Faith chipped in ten after leading the team earlier in the day with 19 herself against Oglethorpe.  Knarr led the Lady Lions with her 19 assists as Xandy Green added 15 more as well.

The pair of victories put Piedmont now at 6-1 overall and stretches its current winning streak to four in a row.  PC will get back on the court after the weekend passes heading to local rival Toccoa Falls College for a night contest with the Eagles in their home gym.  First serve is set for 7:00 pm at the September 10th match.
