Box Score Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College women's soccer team had the run of play on Sunday afternoon against Methodist University and it showed as the Lady Lions completed a 3-0 victory over the visiting Monarchs at Walker Athletic Complex. PC received a complete all-around performance earning the USA South win at home doubling up the Monarchs in the shot department 12-6 while protecting the net with a clean sheet, the team's fourth in 2013 and second in last three games.
PC withstood early pressure from Methodist who created early chances but could not get a shot on frame to finish off the deal. After a back-and-forth first 30 minutes, Piedmont's
Laura Goodwin helped the Lady Lions seize control scoring her 8th goal of the season and first of two on the day when she emphatically headed home a
Kelsey Schaffernoth corner kick to give PC a 1-nil advantage.
Piedmont would take that lead into the intermission outshooting Methodist six to three over the first 45 minutes. After the break, Goodwin would score the second of her two goals against the visitors when she crushed a
Savannah Castles pass to the top left corner of the Methodist net. The senior's score came in the 57th minute as Goodwin continues to pace the PC attack with her offensive onslaught with nine goals in as many games this season.
With PC now up 2-0 and controlling the play, Head Coach
Stephen Andrew would get the insurance goal he was looking for when junior
Kelley Miller scored her first goal of the year putting away a corner kick from teammate
Shayna Rogers. That was the Lady Lions' second score on a corner for the day as Piedmont would roll to the eventual 3-0 decision after that score from Miller in the 87th minute.
Getting the win in the net was senior
Marjorie Hammond who made four saves including several early to keep the clean sheet for Piedmont at home. The shutout was the second for the Lady Lions in the friendly confines of Walker Athletic Complex in 2013. Piedmont owned the advantage in corners as well taking five to Methodist's four.
The victory moves Piedmont to 7-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the USA South with today's league win helping to extend an eight-game unbeaten streak by the Lady Lions since falling in their season opener. PC has not lost in more than four weeks now and will return to the pitch on Wednesday evening when they play host to another conference foe in LaGrange College. Kickoff at Walker is set for 5:30 pm and the game will be broadcast on Piedmont's new Mane Event Broadcasting Network.
