Men's Soccer defeated 1-0 by Methodist University in USA South Match

Goalkeeper Kenneth Hearn settles a ball at his feet in a game where he made six saves against USA South opponent Methodist University. The Lions lost 1-0.
Box Score Demorest, GA -- In a grueling USA South conference match between the Lions and Monarchs of Methodist University, Piedmont couldn't come back from conceding a first half goal. The Lions were outshot 12-8 in the match.

Methodist came out strong against the Lions at Walker Field today, maintaining possession for the much of the first half and gathering several corners against Piedmont early. The Monarchs attempts finally paid in the 16th minute as an errant cross deflected off of three players before the Monarchs forward got a foot on it and sent the eventual game-winner into Piedmont's net.

After the goal, Piedmont stepped up their offensive, with senior forward #Justin Whitaker putting a strong shot on goal, late in the half. Nothing made it past the Monarchs defense though, as Methodist came away from the first half with a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, the Lions stepped up their play and gave the Monarchs a run for their money. Forwards Vincent Thomas and Justin Whitaker continued to get chances on goal on through balls. Both had near misses on frame that could have turned the tide of play. In the back, the Lions defense remained stalwart. Sophomore goalkeeper Kenneth Hearn stepped up and made several tremendous saves to keep the Lions in the match; he would finish the match with six saves overall.

At the end of regulation, the Lions couldn't finish a chance and the final score remained 1-0, advantage Methodist. The Lions are now 2-7 overall and 0-2 in USA South Conference play. Their next match is Wednesday, October 2nd when the Lions will host in-state and USA South Conference rival LaGrange College. The game will start at 7:30 p.m. following the Lady Lions match.
