Box Score Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw earlier today against visiting USA South foe Meredith College in a conference contest at home. The result is the second tie between these two programs in the last four contests with both ties a 1-1 result though this is the first tie between the two at Piedmont.
The Lady Lions had to withstand several set piece chances for the Avenging Angels in the first half as Meredith tacked four corners on in the first 40 minutes getting chances in front of the PC net. However, the defense of the home team would hold strong long enough to give themselves a lead at home as a well-timed through ball from freshman
Katie Zoller to a running
Megan Hatfield led to a shot on frame and a goal for Piedmont. Hatfield timed up her chance well striking the pass first-time past the Meredith keeper.
Piedmont took that 1-0 lead into the intermission and held it for more than 15 minutes in the second half until the Meredith attack would finally break through. A ball played across the box from Meredith's Danielle Lee in the 62nd minute led to a chance for Jessie Davis in front of the net that the Avenging Angel put to the back post and in, leveling the score at one apiece.
Trading chances down the line, the two would go to overtime for the fourth time in the last five contests in this series, one quickly developing as one of the best in the Lady Lion soccer program. Neither side would challenge much in the overtime periods as the two squads combined for just one shot with each team taking away a draw from today's match.
Making nine saves in goal was
Marjorie Hammond who played all 110 minutes of action between the pipes for PC allowing the single score in the 62nd minute. Junior midfielder
Shayna Rogers had three shots to lead the way in that category while Hatfield and senior
Laura Goodwin each added a pair of chances.
Piedmont moves to 6-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 in USA South action on the year as Meredith moves to 5-1-4 (3-0-1 USA South) as both schools stay unbeaten in league play, two of just four teams to do so.
The Lady Lions will get back on the pitch this coming Sunday, September 29th when they play host to visiting Methodist University in another USA South showdown. Kickoff for the Sunday afternoon game is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
