Lions Comeback Thwarted by Tigers as Sewanee wins 4-2

The Lions worked hard for 90 minutes and came from behind to score two goals but it wasn't enough to get past Sewanee's four goals.
Box Score Demorest, GA -- In their third and final match in as many days, the Lions hosted Sewanee University on a sunny day in Demorest, GA. The match was one of the most exciting yet as second half play saw four goals by both teams in a seven minute period. The Lions weren't able to pull out a win though as Sewanee's two first half goals kept the scores apart, 4-2.

Sewanee held possession for much of the first half, testing the Lions down the center of the field often and putting six shots on goal. The Tigers were the first to draw blood as a midfielder found a bit of free space in the Lions defensive third and struck a ball just out of reach by goalkeeper Kenneth Hearn. Piedmont fought back and put two of their own shots on frame to keep the Tigers defense honest. Four minutes later, a defensive error led to another Sewanee goal. With the half running out, the Tigers led the Lions 2-0 and outshooting them six to two.

Piedmont came out with an agenda in the second and turned the game in their favor. Almost immediately, Senior forward Justin Whitaker put two driven balls on frame and the Sewanee keeper did all he could to keep them out of the net. The Lions continued the pressure, winning balls left and right and getting chances. Whitaker had another shot on frame blocked by a Tigers defender.

In the 57th minute, Whitaker turned with a ball, saw a gap, and put a driven ball through the defense onto Junior Vincent Thomas' foot. Thomas took the ball in stride, checked the keeper's positioning, and found an opening to drill a shot into the back of the net. The goal brought the Lions within one of Sewanee's lead. Unfortunately for the Lions, the Tigers maitained discipline and answered with a goal of their own a minute later.

High pressure by Vincent Thomas gave the Tigers another reason to be dissapointed. Thomas forced a Sewanee defender to regurgitate a ball and after beating the defender and one more in a fit of skill, the Lions forward swung another ball beyond the Sewanee goalkeeper and bringing the score to 3-2. Once again though, Sewanee worked hard and put a goal of their own in beyond the Lions defense.

The last fit of excitement came in the 80th minute. The Lions defense gave up a penalty kick after a foul in the box by the defense.  Goalkeeper Kenneth Hearn stepped up to the challenge though and with all of his reach, deflected the penalty shot wide, saving the Lions once again. Hearn ended the day with ten saves including the aforementioned penalty kick.

With the loss, the Lions move to 2-6 on the season. Piedmont will have a week of rest now before their next match, Sunday, September 29th. Piedmont hosts USA South conference opponent Methodist University at 3:00 p.m.
