Castles' Magic Moment in Overtime at Ferrum Hands Lady Lions 5th Straight Win

Savannah Castles struck a ball over the head of the Ferrum keeper in today's 2-1 overtime win for Piedmont who used the golden goal to push their winning streak to five straight matches.
Box Score Ferrum, VA - The Piedmont College women's soccer team scored first but needed an extra couple of minutes to earn their fifth straight victory earlier today picking up a 2-1 win over Ferrum College on the road.  In the USA South opener for the pair of programs, Piedmont saw a newcomer step up big scoring just under 1:30 into overtime for the win.

Piedmont also struck quick with their first score of the match as senior Laura Goodwin continues her hot start to the season notching the goal for the Lady Lions in the 6th minute of play with a finish off a Savannah Castles cross.  For Goodwin, the goal is the 5th for her 2013 campaign, one to remember for the Snellville native so far as she has tabbed at least a point in every match Piedmont has played on the season.

That Lady Lion score would be the last for either side for the next 53 minutes as neither squad would be able to hit the back of the net until Ferrum did so on a bang-bang play at the top of the penalty box.  Panther Morgan Funck was able to strike that chance to the back post of Piedmont's goal to level the two sides at one score a piece.

That goal by the home team would make the final 30 minutes a very interesting half hour as each team would have their chance to score the decider in regulation.

However, neither was able to get on the board in the closing minutes as the two would need to go to overtime to decide a winner.  That decision would not take long though as Piedmont's youngster Castles was able to take a Lady Lion break just over a minute into the overtime and push forward giving the Lady Lions the first good chance of the extra period.

Coming down the left-hand side of the field, Castles was able to beat the Ferrum defender marking her by cutting inside and cracking a long-range effort over the outstretch hands of Panther keeper Caitlyn Deaton who had nine saves up until that point.  The score handed Piedmont a 2-1 decision in overtime, its second overtime win of the 2013 season.

The victory was the fifth straight for PC moving the Lady Lions to 5-1 after dropping their season opener 21 days ago.  Since then Piedmont has outscored its opposition nine to three in the second half or overtime to win five straight.  The Lady Lions don't have long to rest as they take the pitch tomorrow afternoon against William Peace University in another USA South matchup.  Kickoff is set for 3:00 pm tomorrow at Wake Med Soccer Park.
