Lions Battle Wasps to 1-0 Victory on the Road

Freshman forward Franklin Robinson scored his first career goal for the Lions and the game-winner. He and Vincent Thomas combined for 6 of the Lions' 13 shots in the 1-0 victory over Emory & Henry College.
Box Score Emory, VA -- The Piedmont Men's Soccer team fought tooth and nail for a 1-0 victory at Emory & Henry College, today. The Lions took a one goal lead into halftime and held it through the second half to get their first win of the season.

With fresh legs after nearly a week since their last match, the Lions came out swinging against the Wasps in the first half, outshooting Emory & Henry 6-1. Junior Vincent Thomas led the shooting spree, testing the goalkeeper early. With the whole of the Lions offense connecting on passes in the attacking third, it wasn't a surprise when they finally broke through. Freshmen Waldyr Pierre-Louis broke down the left side with a ball, beat the defender, and crossed it into freshmen forward Franklin Robinson who nailed it past the keeper for his first career goal as a Lion and the eventual game-winner.

In the second half of play, the Lions saw increased pressure by the Wasps. It wasn't enough for the Lions defense though, as keeper Kenneth Hearn didn't see a single shot on frame. He and defenders Stephen Sherfy and Sean Melton maintained a fortified defense throughout the match. Piedmont nearly had several more chances on goal including several freekicks on point by senior Justin Whitaker from the top of the eighteen yard box, but the Wasps goalkeeper kept them in the game.

After ninety minutes, the score was set in stone and the Lions moved to 1-3 on the season. With the victory, Piedmont will look to be ready for in-state rival Oglethorpe University this Tuesday night at 7:00 pm within Walker Field on the campus of Piedmont College.
