Box Score
Mount Berry, GA -- The Men's soccer team was overwhelmed in the final match of the Winshape Invitational by a 4-0 margin to the host, Berry Vikings.
In their second match in less than 24 hours, the men first faced adversity with a weather delay. Once the lightning strikes subsided in the area, the men stepped out on the field against Berry.
The Vikings held possession and attacked the Lions defense often in the first half. Goalkeeper Kenneth Hearn was tested early and often by the Blue and Gray stripes; he tallied six saves at the end of the day.
In the 35th minute, a Berry player combined with another on a header across the box, finishing front post and giving the Vikings an advantage before half. The Lions were held to just two shots against Berry's 14 going into halftime 1-0.
Berry came out aggressively in the second half and scored on another cross within ten minutes. The scoring didn't stop there though, as the Vikings took advantage of two more opportunities shortly after. A foul outside the Lion's eighteen yard box setup Berry for a cross and finish and then a brilliant save by Hearn deflected right to the feet of a Viking who quickly finished his chance.
Piedmont's Vincent Thomas gave the Lion's their best chance at a comeback in the 70th minute with a counter attack started by freshman midfielder Chris Keller and freshmen forward Waldyr Pierre-Louis. Thomas got in behind the defense on the through ball and rocketed a ball towards the goal. The keeper did all he could to deflect it away and hold off the attack.
Finishing chances became the story of the day as Berry came away with the 4-0 win after a 25-5 shot count over Piedmont. The Lions move to 0-2 after today's matchup. September 10th will be Piedmont's next competition date as they travel to Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC with a 5:00 p.m. start time.
