Piedmont Softball Wins First in Extra But Drops Second And Third Games To Fall From USA South Tournament

The Lady Lions won the first and lost the following two games dropping them from the 2013 USA South Softball Tournament.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Rocky Mount, NC - Lady Lions softball started off the day with an exhausting 3-2 win in thirteen innings against Greensboro College. They came up against Christopher Newport next but were overwhelmed 7-1. Moving to the loser's bracket for game three, Piedmont battled with the Panthers of Ferrum to nine innings but lost 3-2, eliminating them from the USA South Softball Tournament.

Game One - Greensboro College vs. Piedmont College

#2-seeded Piedmont stepped out to an early lead in the first inning. Olivia Duncan put herself in scoring position with a double and Kristin Hamby obliged with an RBI single to score Duncan. Another double came from Jordin Ellingson in the bottom of the second to make the score 2-0; this one scoring Megan Kesler who reached on a fielder's choice just prior.

Greensboro returned fire in the top of the fourth. A single and fielding error allowed one runner to get past the Lady Lions defense. The #7-seeded Pride tied up the game in the top of the sixth with an RBI double.

Both teams left players on base in the seventh and moved into extra innings when no one could produce a run. Piedmont had a strong chance at winning in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded but Greensboro got the necessary putout. In the bottom of the 13th Piedmont finally saw an opportunity. Ellingson walked and made it to third in a fielder's choice situation. Senior Megan McClain stepped up to the plate and gave the Lady Lions a walk-off single to score Ellingson and end game one 3-2.

Jordin Ellingson pitched the entire 13 innings for Piedmont, striking out 10 in the order.

Game Two - Christopher Newport University vs. Piedmont College

The Lady Lions faced off against the #3-seeded Captains in game two. Christopher Newport came out swinging, though in the first. Two batters reached on a single and fielder's choice before C. Mitchell blasted a 3 RBI homerun over the fence to give the Captains their eventual game-winning runs. Piedmont gave up another 3 RBI homerun to CNU in the top of the third to increase the deficit.

In the sixth, the Lady Lions gave up a run in the top of the inning but made their mark on the boxscore in the bottom of the inning. Taylor Morgan grounded out to score Abby Atkinson from third and put the final score on the board.

Brittney Head pitched the complete game two, striking out two and giving up six earned runs. Piedmont was kept to only 3 hits in the contest. The Lady Lions dropped to the Loser's Bracket with the loss.

Game Three - Piedmont College vs. Ferrum College

Piedmont's third game of the day was another close contest facing off against #1-seeded Ferrum College. Both teams took to defense early, until the third. Abby Atkinson tripled in the top of the inning was Ferrum forced a ground out on the next batter. The Panthers knocked a 2 RBI homer over the wall in the bottom of the inning to strike first.

In the top of the sixth, the Lady Lions had bases loaded for Olivia Duncan. The rookie of the year singled, scoring two and almost a  third but Taylor Morgan was tagged out at home in what might have been the game winner. Both sides defended the seventh and forced extra innings. A win was not in the cards for the Lady Lions though, as Ferrum's center fielder hit a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the ninth inning. Jordin Ellingson struck out seven in her second complete game of the day.

The Lady Lions loss to Ferrum meant elimination from the USA South Softball Tournament and an end to the 2013 regular season. "Our ladies fought their hearts out today," said Head Coach Terry Martin. "They came into the day focused and won a tough game one. We were unfortunate in game two and played a better opponent in game three. I'm very proud of how the girls fought for every win this season and came together as a team." The Lady Lions Softball team now must wait for NCAA regional bids for their chance at a NCAA Division III National Tournament.
