Box Score Rocky Mount, NC - The LIons lost a tough match 4-2 against Methodist University this morning in the second round of USA South Tournament play. The loss moves them into the loser's bracket where they will play LaGrange at 6:00 p.m. tonight.
Methodist took advantage of Piedmont errors early in the first inning to get runners in scoring position. The Monarch's scored one on a fielder's choice and the next on a groundout before the end of the inning. The two runs stuck on the board for several innings as both teams putout the opponent's order.
In the bottom of the
Keith Grabowski singled to give the Lions a baserunner.
Tate Koons sacrifice-bunted to put him in scoring position and he moved to third after a ground out. The Methodist catcher took his eye off a pitch at the next at bat and Grabowski took off for home to give the Lions their first notch on the boxscore.
The Monarchs countered wtih an RBI single of their own in the top of the fifth to bring in the eventual game-winner. They increased the lead in the top of the sixth with an RBI double to put the score at 4-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, Kevin D'Antignac doubled to give the Lions a fighting chance at a comeback. After advancing to third on a fly-out the next at bat, D'Antignac reached home on a
Tim Nunez RBI single to set the final score, 4-2, in stone.
The Lions had eight hits to Methodist's four at the final putout, but couldn't capitalize and gave up key errors early.
Chris Goershel pitched the complete game giving up two earned runs.
With the loss, Piedmont moves into the loser's bracket. Their next game between LaGrange College will be played at 6:00 p.m. The Lions defeated LaGrange with a score of 9-1 on the first day of the USA South Tournament.
