Box Score Martinsville, VA -- The Piedmont College volleyball team made history earlier tonight with their 3-1 victory over William Peace University in the USA South Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at Patrick Henry Community College. For the Lady Lions, the win was their 28th of the season setting a new record for wins in a season by a Piedmont volleyball team surpassing the 2003 team's 27 victories from ten seasons ago.
Piedmont took the opening set by a 25-21 score before dominating the second set 25-16 to take a 2-0 set lead in the match and looking to close it out early in the championship tourney. However, in the third, WPU rode a seven point streak to overcome a two-point deficit trailing 12-10 to go up 17-12 putting the pressure back on PC.
The Pacers would be able to hold on to the lead though Piedmont did come storming back to tie up the set at 23 all on a kill from Lady Lion
Jackie Campbell. However, William Peace took three of the next four points to take the third set and stay alive in the match pushing the decision to four sets.
Now leading two sets to one, Piedmont pushed back hard in the fourth with the Lady Lions winning in dominating fashion 25-15 to close out the match. The 3-1 victory gave the Lady Lions a win in the quarterfinal round of the USA South Championships and sends PC to the semis of the year-end league event where they will face the North Division top seed in the Averett Cougars.
Piedmont's
Kaitlin Norman was the team's leader in kills on the night with her 16 coming on 30 attempts as the junior hit an even .500 with just one error on the night. Also in double-figures in the kills column was newcomer
Jackie Campbell who had 11 on the match with a .321 hitting percentage needing 28 attempts at the net.
Assist leaders were the usual suspects as sophomore
Xandy Green and senior
Katheryn Knarr were each over 20 in that column. Knarr was the leader with her 23 while Green was close behind with 20.
The only Lady Lion in double figures defensively was none other than 2013 USA South Libero of the Year
Katie Faith who tallied 13 digs on the evening in the 3-1 win. Defensive specialist
Jessica Hollis added a half dozen to the effort while two more,
Jennifer Opper and Knarr, each added five to the effort.
PC was also a force at the net defensively as the team tallied 20 block assists with Opper leading the way in that column with her seven in the match while adding six more was Norman.
With the victory, Piedmont moves to an incredible 28-8 overall and has won their last five matches heading into tomorrow's semifinal match with the Cougars of Averett University. The top seed from the North Division, Averett defeated PC in their only regular season match up with the Cougars winning in three in their home gym. First serve in the November 9th USA South semifinal contest is set for 2:00 pm at Patrick Henry Community College.
