Box Score Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College women's soccer team got a big moment from a freshman in a USA South quarterfinal at home against visiting Greensboro College at the Walker Athletic Complex. The 1-0 victory over the Pride in postseason play sends the Lady Lions to their first appearance in the USA South Final Four round held in Martinsville, Virginia at the Smith River Sports Complex.
In an evenly contested game throughout the day, the Lady Lions used depth and experience to earn their first trip to Martinsville in just their second year as a USA South member. In the first half, it was Greensboro who owned a slim shot advantage 6-4 over the Lady Lions though Piedmont made one of theirs count in just the 4th minute of play when freshman
Caitlyn Dove took a pass from senior
Laura Goodwin and rocketed a shot past Greensboro keeper Jessica Thatcher for the score.
For Dove, the goal was the first of the season for the youngster who became the 15th different Lady Lion to notch a goal in the 2013 season in what continues to be a well-balanced attack for Piedmont. With the early goal, the squad could now settle in for the remainder of the first half despite facing four corner kicks and six shots from the visitors in that opening period.
After the intermission, Piedmont assumed control outshooting the Pride four to three and taking a 4-1 advantage in the corner kick column after not earning a corner in the first 45 minutes. PC looked to have made it 2-0 on one of those corner chances when freshman
Morgan Edelman headed a ball just past the post in the second half. However, the midfielder's chance that went just wide of the post kept the score at 1-0 in favor of Piedmont with the Lady Lions continuing to pressure the Pride.
Holding the visitors scoreless was a pair of keepers for Piedmont as senior
Marjorie Hammond and sophomore
Michaela Gardner each played a half of the squad's shutout performance. Each of the two made a pair of saves in the shutout which is PC's 10th clean sheet of the 2013 season and third 1-0 victory in their last five games.
The victory moves Piedmont to 15-2-2 overall and pushes the second seeded Lady Lions on in the USA South Championship Tournament while 7th seeded Greensboro College finishes their season at 8-8-1. PC will now await the winner of #3 seed Averett University and #6 seed Covenant College who will play their quarterfinal matchup on Monday, November 4th.
Piedmont earned a win and a tie in the 2013 season against their two possible opponents as the Lady Lions drew with Covenant 1-1 at the home of the Scots on Wednesday night a few days after defeating Averett 2-1 on the road. The semifinal will take place on Friday, November 8th with the game time either set for 12:00 pm or 2:30 pm depending on the seeds that make it through to the final four round.
