Box Score Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College women's basketball team scored the most points in their last 13 games dating back to last season winning 93-45 over local foe Toccoa Falls College earlier tonight in a home contest. Piedmont saw three players score in double digits hitting better than 43% from three-point land in the first half to explode out to a 39-18 lead at halftime only to score 54 second half points in a quality all-around performance on White-Out the Cave night.
The night started with three three-pointers in a row from youngster
Gabby Arencibia as the guard from Hiwassee, Georgia was connecting on everything she threw at the basket to begin the game. Arencibia's three tri-fectas came within the first three minutes of the game as PC started hot out the gate on a 9-0 run courtesy of her work behind the arc.
A pair of Toccoa Falls free throws got the Eagles on the board as the game started to settle in though
Brianna Barrett's three pointer at the midway point of the first half made the Lady Lion lead 11 at 18-7. From that point forward in the first half, PC would only allow 11 points to the visitors despite scoring 21 themselves to take a 39-18 lead into the halftime break.
A dozen seconds into the second period,
Elise Reyes keyed the defensive effort of Piedmont blocking a Toccoa attempt down low which lead to a fastbreak three-point try from
Chandler Alverson who connected, bringing her point total in the game to six points and stretching the Piedmont lead to 42-18. A trey from
Mary Kate Rushton just more than six minutes later pushed the lead to 30 as Piedmont went up 57-27. Rushton would connect again less than a minute later hitting her second three of the night on an assist from
Taylor Swoszowski.
Piedmont kept the lead at or around 30 for the next eight minutes before pushing the margin to 40 on a jumper from
Carly Sales with 3:27 remaining to go up 83-43. An
Andrea Bell free throw at the 1:15 mark made the lead as large as it would get at 48, a margin that would be the final difference at 93-45 with the Lady Lions cruising to their first win of 2013-14 in their second home game of the season after dropping a heartbreaking three-point decision to Centre on Saturday in the season opener.
For the Lady Lions, the 48 point margin of victory is the largest over Toccoa Falls College in the
Jamie Purdy era at Piedmont besting the previous high of an 18 point win in the 2005 season, Purdy's first season at the helm. PC had previously not defeated the Eagles by more than 38 points in the school's NCAA era which extends back to the 2003 season until tonight.
Junior
Symone Ball took the most shots on the team with her 14 but shot 50% to account for the production tabbing 16 points and pulling down nine boards to finish one rebound shy of the double-double. Also with three turnovers and a steal, Ball led three Lady Lions in double-figures including teammates
Taylor Swoszowski and
Gabby Arencibia.
Swoszowski was four for six from the field to total her 13 points making all four of her attempts at the charity stripe which came in an 18 second span during the first half. Arencibia was lights out from beyond the three-point arc hitting on four of her seven tries from downtown with all but one of her shots from the field coming outside the arc. The newcomer also added four rebounds and two steals to her stat line as well as an assist in 17 minutes of play.
Chandler Alverson led the team with her four assists followed by
Lauren Hamel and
Symone Ball who had a trio each. Ball was the leader in rebounds with her nine while Alverson was second with seven.
Carly Sales had six boards in a nice night off the bench scoring eight points as well on three of four shooting from the field.
The Lady Lions move to 1-1 with the win and will face Agnes Scott College in a contest away from home tomorrow night with tip off set for 6:00 pm. Piedmont will return to the Cave following their Wednesday match up with the Scotties when PC plays host to Birmingham Southern College on Saturday, November 23rd with an afternoon tip off of 2:00 pm.
