Lady Lion Soccer Defeated by 8th Ranked Emory in NCAA National Tournament

Senior Laura Goodwin ended her career with a goal earlier today in Piedmont's 6-1 loss against #8 Emory in the NCAA National Tournament as PC wraps up 2013 with a 17-3-2 overall record.
Box Score Atlanta, GA - The Piedmont College women's soccer team saw its 2013 season come to a close earlier today in the first round of the NCAA National Tournament falling to #8 Emory University 6-1.  The Eagles scored three goals in the first 11 minutes of the contest to put away the Lady Lions early on as Piedmont was eliminated from the NCAA postseason.

Piedmont applied pressure in the first few minutes earning a corner kick to put the home team on their heels to start the match.  However, that pressure did last long as the hosts broke through early and then often as Emory scored in the 5th, 9th, and 11th minute to tally more goals in a game than PC had allowed in any 90 minute contest during the 2013 season as the Lady Lions struggled defensively against the top 10 team.

The Eagles then added goals in the 27th, 30th and 42nd minutes to tack on three more goals to put Piedmont down 6-nil after 45 minutes of play.

Following the intermission, Piemdont's Laura Goodwin gave the Lady Lions a moment they had not yet had scoring Piedmont's first goal in the NCAA National Tournament in the program's second appearance.  Goodwin's goal came in the 55th minute as fellow senior Sarah Hill served a ball from the right wing into the Emory back four who could not handle the oncoming Goodwin.

That goal from Piedmont ended a scoreless streak by the Eagles who had not allowed a goal since October 18 in a 2-1 win over New York University. Goodwin's strike past the oncoming Eagle keeper gave Piedmont a moment the program had not yet had, but the Lady Lions fell by the final 6-1 margin to #8 Emory who won their eighth straight game.  The Eagles posted 28 shots to five for PC though four of those for the Lady Lions were on target as Emory put 11 on frame.

The Lady Lions finish the year at 17-3-2 overall having claimed the program's first-ever USA South Tournament Championship just a week ago.  Piedmont's NCAA appearance in the program's second such showing in the last three seasons.
