Lions Answer Early Toccoa Falls Goal With Two of Their Own to Snatch 2-1 Win Over Local Rival

Sophomore midfielder Connor Lockridge stepped up to the challenge and gave the Lions their game-winner with a 63rd minute header off of Vincent Thomas' free kick.
Box Score Demorest, GA -- The Lions overcame adversity against local rival Toccoa Falls College tonight as the Eagles put an early goal in, forcing Piedmont to comeback with two of their own. Piedmont outshot the Eagles 12-5 in the match.

The history between these teams has always been fierce. The Lions have never lost a match to Toccoa, but the scores of the past two years were 2-1 in 2011 and 1-0 in 2012.

In the first half, the Eagles took advantage of a Lions defensive blunder and notched an early goal in the scoresheet. With the Lions now down, the Eagles worked hard and continued to frustrate the home team.

It took until the 43rd minute for the Lions to find their footing. Senior forward Justin Whitaker's first shot of the match was blocked to earn a Lions corner. Whitaker then whipped a ball near post and freshman forward Franklin Robinson met it with his foot to find the back of the net and the equalizing goal just before half.

Returning to the pitch ready in the second half, Toccoa Falls immediately put a shot on frame only for Hearn to gather it in tight and record his only save of the match. Piedmont answered with shots by Robert WIlliams and Whitaker several minutes later but both were wide of the goal.

In the 64th minute, the Lions found their game-winner. After a foul near the home bench in Piedmont's attacking third, junior forward Vincent Thomas belted a ball into the Toccoa Falls six yard box. Midfielder Connor Lockridge beat the Eagles defense and whipped the ball past the goalkeeper with a header to give the Lions their game-winning goal and Lockridge's second goal of the season.

Toccoa Falls made several attempts to answer but the Lions defense held strong and came away with a 2-1 win after 90 minutes.

The Lions are now 4-7 overall. Their next match is Friday, October 11th at 7:00 p.m. at home. The Lions will host USA South Conference opponent North Carolina Wesleyan College following the Lady Lion match at 5:00 p.m.
