Women's Soccer Stays Unbeaten in Last Ten Games With Close 2-1 Win at Agnes Scott

The 2013 Lady Lion soccer team continues to post the program's longest unbeaten streak since a 13-game stretch during the 2011 season that saw PC claim a conference title and make its first ever appearance in the NCAA National Tournament.
Box Score Decatur, GA - The Piedmont College women's soccer team needed a pair of goals to get by in-state rival Agnes Scott College earlier today with a 2-1 road victory.  The out-of-conference battle in Decatur is the only contest outside of USA South play for the Lady Lions in their final 13 games of the 2013 season.

Outshooting the host Scotties 30 to 4 for the afternoon, Piedmont was unable to break through until the 42nd minute as it was junior Nikki Means finding the net for the Lady Lions.  Means put back a rebound surrendered by Agnes Scott keeper Sydney Holstad who played well on the day stopping 11 of Piedmont's 13 chances on goal.

However, the Scotties were unable to stop Means who tallied her second goal of the year, and first since scoring in a 5-0 win against Guilford.

The score would be the only one of the first half as Piedmont went into the break leading the home team.  Coming back from the intermission, the Lady Lions would see their lead disappear in the 67th minute when a hopeful long ball from the Agnes Scott defense found the feet of Helene Somda behind the PC back four.  Somda was able to connect and put the ball past outstretched Piedmont keeper Michaela Gardner for the equalizer.

With the match now tied at one each, a fire was lit under the feet of the Lady Lion attack who quickly created several chances in behind the Agnes Scott back line in the next few minutes.  Just over two minutes after the Scotties drew level, Piedmont's Megan Hatfield was able to get back the advantage for the visitors with her looped left-footed shot over Holstad with the assist coming from Laura Goodwin

Now up 2-1, Piedmont continued to create more chances offensively and earn set piece chances in the final third, but the Lady Lions would not need any more scores as the one-goal advantage held true for another win in 2013.  Geting the victory between the posts for the Lady Lions was sophomore Michaela Gardner who allowed just the single score and saved the Scotties' other shot on goal.  PC is unbeaten in its last ten games now going 9-0-1 during that time frame.

Overall, the Lady Lions sit at 9-1-1 on the year.  Piedmont will have some time to rest from competition before hosting North Carolina Wesleyan in a USA South match next Friday, October 11th.  Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 pm in the evening contest.
