Women's Soccer Settles For 1-1 Tie in Regular Season Finale at USA South Foe Covenant

Senior Laura Goodwin scored her 14th goal of the season earlier tonight on a screamer outside the box to put her Lady Lions level with hosting Covenant College in what turned into a 1-1 tie on the road.
Box Score Lookout Mountain, GA - The Piedmont College women's soccer team was unable to get the game winning goal earlier tonight in their 1-1 draw at Covenant College in USA South play.  The Lady Lions had to come from behind in the match to draw level but could not get the win the squad needed to earn a share of the conference regular season title for the first time in the NCAA era.

After a scoreless first half that saw the visiting Lady Lions struggle to get going offensively getting outshot 5-2, PC would see more pressure on their defense in the beginning of the second half.  Covenant finally broke through on a Bethany Logan goal in the 55th minute to go up 1-0 over Piedmont with a little more than 35 minutes to play.

However, after the score, the visiting green and gold awoke and began to put the pressure on the host Scots who were outshot in the second 45 minutes 12-5 by the Lady Lions.  Coming through in the 80th minute was none other than senior forward Laura Goodwin who took over getting on the ball and drilling a shot from distance off the crossbar and into the back of the net to bring PC level at 1 all with about ten to go in regulation.

Once neither squad could get the game winner before the whistle at 90 minutes played though Piedmont would have several chances down the stretch, the two would head to overtime, a spot PC was in for the sixth time this season having gone 4-0-1 in those five previous situations.

After being outshot 4-1 in the first overtime period, Piedmont would dominate the second overtime creating four chances to Covenant's pair.  With just seconds remaining, a Lady Lion corner would create chaos for the Covenant defense with a ball bouncing around the top of the goal box.  However, the home team held on strong in the closing seconds to clutch the 1-1 draw and hold off the opposing side.

PC held the overall shot advantage in a roller coaster match that saw each side control the play for extended periods of time.  The Lady Lions had 19 shots in the double overtime match to Covenant's 16 also holding the upper hand in corners 5-3.  Combining in goal to allow the single score was a pair of keepers for Piedmont as sophomore Michaela Gardner played the final 65 minutes allowing just the long goal and making a half dozen saves while senior Marjorie Hammond posted 45 scoreless minutes in the first half making two saves.

The draw moves Piedmont to 14-2-2 overall and 9-1-2 in league action.  The Lady Lions own the #2 seed in the upcoming USA South Athletic Conference Championship Tournament which starts this weekend with Quarterfinal Saturday.  PC will play host to #7 seed Greensboro College, a team that Piedmont went to overtime with just this past weekend coming away with a 1-0 victory in the road match.  This weekend's match with the Pride is set for Saturday, November 2nd though the kickoff time has yet to be set.
